Sadly couldn't visit this time because of Covid restrictions, but we'll remember doing so in the past. This simple little place recalls the way of noncomformist worship of days gone by.

This modest, atmospheric building is hidden down one of Tewkesburys historic alleyways. It gives a real insight into the humble origins of this non conformist movement. It won't take long to look round, if the covers are off the baptismal trough you will be surprised at how deep it is. It may not be as imposing as the abbey but it has a charm of its' own.

The Chapel is closed during winter, so we were lucky to be allowed to look around. It is a small but charming building that incorporates an early timber framed house and a chapel.

Well presented Chapel - shows how it would have looked 100 + years ago. Well worth a visit if visiting Tewkesbury

This museum has a very good audio guide which helps you to absorb the history and see it from the point of view of an inhabitant of 14th century

Another walk back in time. Really well thought out with props to get you into the mood and have your photo taken. So interesting to see what things were like back in the day. Worth. A visit for all ages.

Have been the past few years to the 'Discovering Bats' day held during October half term. The John Moore Museum hosts this in the Baptist chapel which has recently been renovated - the glass floor is a bit stomach churning but the displays and information panels are brilliant. Always a friendly welcome from the staff/volunteers and a great experience whatever the weather

Quite unique, has a real feel of history about it. Just opposite the abbey in church street and well worth a visit, isn’t a destination for the day but well worth taking the time if your in Tewkesbury. Also need to go to the bottom of the alley, the old chapel grave yard is hidden away and I’m told has the grave of Shakespeare’s sister. Walk to the end of the grave yard and you get a great view of the ham thround in.

As we walked back along Church St. from the Abbey, I saw a sign and back lane which looked intriguing. Decided to have a look and found this old bit of religious history. Not obvious at all. Looking through the windows of this chapel on a Sunday afternoon, we wound it packed with people! We then carried along the little pathway to view the cemetery by the River Avon. A poignant area.

The Old Baptist Chapel in Tewkesbury dates to the days of the Acts of Uniformity which allowed only one church, one form of worship and one ecclesiastic Authority in England. If you did not wish to be a part of the Church of England, it was generally wise to conceal it, and actually following your own church was fraught with peril. But, many did. Tewkesbury has two surviving gems from this period, and the Baptist Chapel is one. Built in one of the ancient lanes, it was designed to resemble a house externally. Internally it is a hall with a gallery around three sides facing the tall windows that occupy the “street” wall. Beautifully restored, it is now part of the John Moore Museum located in the medieval merchant’s houses in Church Street, and access is by arrangement from the museum.

The second example of a hidden church is nearby, at 16 St Mary’s Lane, and was. Quaker, or Friends Meeting House. It is not open to the public as it is now a private residence, but behind it is the “Friends Burial Ground, today maintained as a garden and which is open to visitors.
