This is one of the few caves where you can see authentic cave paintings in person. It's an incredible experience for those fascinated by early human art. However, access is limited to 60 visitors per day, and English tours often sell out a month in advance. To secure your spot, purchase tickets as soon as you've confirmed your travel dates to the area.

I really wanted to see some genuine cave paintings whilst in the area, and after doing some research, Font de Gaume looked like a good choice.
It is not all about the precision of the artwork or how good they look, but for me, it is standing where people 15,000 years ago were creating these masterpieces with the basic tools & knowledge and really seeing the amazing art which they created.
The colours were so strong, the definition & detail were so pronounced that there was no question of what you were looking at.
The guide was so knowledgeable, and even after the tour had finished, he gave us a deeper insight into the cave system itself.
I would 100% recommend a visit to this place and so glad I chose this one.

Very high quality tour of the caves. Our guide was knowledgeable and attentive to each participant. Our group ranged in ages from 2-80 and everyone had a good time! Perfect for a rainy day.

The dates for the release of tickets appears random, with limited ticket availability, this was far from ideal. The website was not particularly straightforward with English translation.
The lady in the shop who collected the tickets was brusk and unhelpful. By the time we reached our tour guide we were a little stressed.
The tour guide was enthusiastic about his subject and helpful and I really couldn’t fault him. Personally, as someone who has no specific interest in prehistoric history, I wasn’t wowed by the whole tour, I’m not sure it’s something for someone who just has an hour or two to kill. I think as amazing as the caves are, it didn’t ’float my boat’

Book on-line for three English guided tour. There are only 2 a day. Max of 12 people
The tickets do go. Easy to find. Small car park. Start up a small incline for 10 mins.
Briggite our guide was very knowledgeable. The inside cave experience is about 45 mins .
You can clearly make out the bison and reindeer. 17000 years old.

Unfortunately, despite having tickets for the 1:30 tour, we were not admitted because we weren't there at 1:00. The tickets do say to arrive half an hour early, and they mean it (of course, if you want people to arrive at 1:00.... Then you should say the ticket is for 1:00). Notably, the tickets don't say you will be turned away if you are there at your actual tour time, simply that they scan tickets half an hour before.
tl;dr -- If you are going to this site, make sure you get there half an hour before the time on your ticket, or you won't be admitted

Maybe we were spoiled by going to Pech Merle first, but the guide at Font-de-Gaume had to position us crowded together in narrow passageways before flipping on the lights to reveal the beautiful cave art. He seemed very bossy, the way he commanded our exact positioning. Also, a claustrophobe would have a hard time with the way he locked the exterior door behind us after crowding us all into the dark cave.

It is January 21, 2024 snd the tickets for February have not shown up on the website. I thought that tickets for each month are offered for sale 15 days prior to each month? Anyone know what's going on??? Thanks!

It is not possible to make reservations or purchase tickets in advance. Get there early the day you wish to view. I'd recommend that you get there a minimum of an hour before opening, more if you can.

After waiting for 2.5 hours to buy the tickets, do you have to continue waiting until it is your turn to enter? How does that work exactly? Do I need to plan on arriving at 7am and spending the whole day there?

yes 13 people visit at one time. if your ticket is after 13 you will be given a time to come back. the village is nearby to walk to for a coffee or wander by the river and is very nice. I think Monday is the only English tour and no headphones available. leave plenty of time particularly to get there early to queue before it opens. no facilities there but a shop when it's open and toilets after you buy a ticket.

I understand that as of January, 2018 it is no longer possible to reserve tickets to Font de Gaume. One must stand in line early, on the day one wishes to visit. Is anyone aware of private group tours?

It seems they have changed their ticket purchasing back to the old way. It was very nice to be able to purchase on-line and very surprising to be able to do so. Just go very early in the morning and early in your stay so you can try again if you're too late the 1st time. It was amazing and well worth our second try:)

I don't think tour companies offer advanced tickets. You may want to call the local tourist office for Les Eyzies de Tayac as they are most likely to know the latest. Here is 2018 infofrom the local tourist office:
"Font de Gaume Tickets UPDATE 1 January 2018:
as of January 2018 it is no longer possible to buy tickets in advance for Font de Gaume, Les Combarelles and Abri Cap Blanc. Each cave has its own quota of available tickets, and all of these will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis on the day when the ticket office opens at 9:30 am each day except Saturday (when the caves are closed to the public).
Visitors from around the world visit Les Eyzies de Tayac, with the main goal being a visit to Font de Gaume. The information on the internet is often outdated or completely wrong / false.. this is because over the past 5 years Font de Gaume has changed its ticket policy 5 times, making it a nightmare for a lot of visitors [ and locals ]".
If you go to get in line I would recommend going 45 minutes to an hour before the office opens in shoulder or low season and perhaps more in the heavy tourist season.
The French Naational Monuments website (which is dense and confusing) lists a phone number but I've never found it useful. however, here it is:
