Over centuries fishing has been most important for Saint-Jean-de-Luz' economy, only since the end of the 19th century shared with tourism. A walk around its harbour, located at the mouth of the river Nivelle, makes for a pleasant and interesting experience. Close to its narrow entrance like a canal is a lighthouse from 1936. From here one goes along the Quai de l'Infante past some classicist 17th century stone mansions for wealthy shipowners to the area called 'Port de Pêche', where one will see all kind of colourful fishing boats, such as 'Fileyeur' for gillnets, 'Ligneur' (liner, especially to catch hake), 'Chalutier' (trawler), 'Bolincheur' (purse seiner) and 'Canneur' (bailboat).
Crossing the Charles de Gaulle bridge one will encounter several information boards - in French and Basque - about fishing and whaling. In Saint-Jean-de-Luz' 'Golden Age', the 17th century, whale hunting had been besides cod-fishing the most important source of income. For this the men here used to be away for months, fishing off the coast of Newfoundland, at least till the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), when the land was ceded to Great Britain. But at this time Saint-Jean-de-Luz was also known for its corsairs, which earned it by the British the sobriquet 'Viper's Nest'.
Walking up on the Ciboure side of the port one will see pleasure craft at the 'Port de Plaisance'. From here it is worthwhile to continue along the Quai Maurice Ravel with the house, where the composer was born, towards the fort of Socoa. Looking back one will see the Grande Plage besides the harbour entrance, while out in the bay are the three sea walls, that protect the port from the stormy Atlantic since the 19th century.

D’ici les pêcheurs partaient à la pêche à la baleine et la morue, puis ce fut la sardine et le thon. Actuellement pêche artisanale, qui ramène surtout du merlu.

Es un puerto pequeño, os recomendamos pasear por las calles aledañas donde hay restaurantes y poder tomar pescado y marisco fresco.
Es bonito ver arribar o salir barcos del puertecito y pensar en lo que fue en los siglos XV cuando llegaban a el barcos balleneros o el siglo XVI que llegaban los corsarios.

Idyllisch, so sollte Strand sein. Naturbelassen, familiär, entspannend und entschleunigend. Schön, wie früher. Kein Fastfood, nur regionale Küche.

A beautiful port which is also scenic because of the colorful houses surrounding it. It was quiet when I went. There is a cruise which takes place at 8:30 am but I missed it.

We watched boats going in and out of the port from our room. It appears to have over 100 commercial fishing boats in the section of the port. Pleasure craft located in a different section. Very colorful

Para mi lo mejor es ir en coche, ahora todo depende de como se quiere desplazar hasta Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
Alquilar un coche en Francia no es barato pero siempre hay chollos de fin de semana o si el alquiler del coche es superior a 3 días.
Hay una línea de tren directa de Irún hasta San Juan de Luz y referente a los autocares, hay una línea directa o casi directa también.
