Now called 'Maison Louis XIV' the two storey stone building with two corner towers was the home of the wealthy shipowner Joannis de Lohobiague. Located on the actual Place des Corsaires by the Port de Pêche it is still inhabited by the same family, but three rooms in the second floor can be visited by guided tours from the beginning of April to the beginning of November. Since we were there in March, we could not enter, so all we did was trying to imagine past times, while sitting in the café-bar 'Le Suisse' in the ground floor of the house.
The 17th century is looked upon as the 'Golden Age' of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, when its inhabitants were making a fortune from cod-fishing, whaling and as corsairs. Many stone houses were built and the town had about 12'000 inhabitants. No wonder Saint-Jean-de-Luz was selected as place for the wedding of the King of France, Louis XIV, and Maria Theresa, daughter of King Philip IV of Spain. It was considered to be an important event, since it was part of the peace treaty between France and Spain after 24 years of war.
Before and after the 'mariage' on June 9th, 1660 in the 'Eglise de Saint-Jean-Baptiste' the then 21 years old King of France spent about 40 days in St.Jean-de-Luz, staying in the house of the rich 'armateur'. His future wife, also 21 years old, was accommodated in the meantime not far from here at another shipowners mansion, now called 'Maison de l'Infante'. Only towards the end of August of that year the newly wed couple made the 'Joyous Entry' into Paris.

If you can’t understand French the written English sheet given to you is inaccurate, has not been updated and is very brief. You have to wait for the very extended French info to be given. Only 3 rooms to view. We were part of a tour party of 11, there were 4 who didn’t speak fluent French. The tour guide had good English but did not speak it during the tour. I enjoy old buildings but not when I have to stand still and listen to what I can’t understand.

Si pasáis por San Juan de Luz os recomendamos visitar esta casa, que no tiene pérdida pues está en el centro del pueblo en la plaza del mismo nombre.
Pierde esplendor por las terrazas que se ubican en las cercanías, curioso el nombre de esta casa, que nunca perteneció al Rey Sol; fue construida en la época de máximo esplendor del pueblo, en el siglo XVII, cuando a su puerto arribaban los barcos balleneros y su propietario fue Joannis de Lohobiague, un rico armador de la época.
Recibe su nombre, porque en ella se alojó Luis XIV, en 1660 antes de casarse con su prima la infanta de España: María Teresa de Austria. Tal y como se había acordado en el Tratado de los Pirineos, poniendo así fin la Guerra de los Treinta Años que enfrentó a Francia y España.
Esta casa aún pertenece a los descendientes del armador, es una casa habitada, visitable la segunda y última planta; en la taquilla de entrada, te dan una guía plastificada en castellano, con explicaciones de la las estancias por las que pasamos.
Eso si, veréis que la traducción es literal del francés al español, no muy bien revisada, por ejemplo que recuerde, legume lo traduce como legumbres en vez de verdura. Pero bueno, eso no resta belleza a la casa.
La entrada cuesta 6.5 los adultos y 4 los menores de 12. No está permitido hacer fotos en el interior de las estancias, sólo en la escalera de acceso.

Nous avons seulement pu prendre des photos car c'était fermé le mardi ! Dommage car nous étions nombreux ce jour-là à Saint Jean de Luz en visite ! Belle bâtisse à côté de la rue Gambetta.

Un prix exhorbitant pour quelques pièces d'une maison où Louis XIV n'a passé que 40 jours.

Went with three children aged 4, 8 and 10. Staff were rude and inhospitable. Very poor experience, would not recommend.

Très très cher pour une visite express.
5 pieces à visiter, photos interdites pour conserver le patrimoine (mais visiblement les photos n’ont pas posé de problème lorsqu’il a s’agit de faire un livre sur la maison. Livre à acheter bien sur !), 4 statues de cire : mais pourquoi ?!?!
Extrêmement décevant. A éviter. Ou alors avec un prix plus en rapport avec ce que l’on voit.

Super expérience, la visite est très enrichissante et la guide vraiment super. La visite dure une grosse demi heure, c'est un peu court, notamment par rapport au tarif, mais la vie, les décors et les explications sont top.

La guide est adorable et vraiment très pédagogue. Nous avons beaucoup apprécié les lieux, les anecdotes historiques, ce fut très instructif. J'enlève un point car absence de sanitaires prévus pour les visiteurs (un principe selon moi) et la capacité limitee de visiteurs. Nous sommes passes mais beaucoup de gens n'ont pu entrer (par contre possibilité pour eux de réserver la prochaine séance, ce qui sous-tend moins de places disponibles aux prochaines sessions) Donc, un conseil soyez plus que ponctuels si vous voulez visiter...

Bien que courte, la visite est très sympa ! Il n'y a que 4 pièces à visiter (la maison est toujours occupée par la famille d'origine). Mais le (très) gros point fort de la visite est la guide qui vous transmet les informations de manière passionnée, ludique voir même théâtrale et avec humour ! un grand merci à elle !
