Saint Florentin Church is a small, Gothic church close to the main square and the Royal Castle. Despite it’s central location, it is not the main church in Amboise. The much larger and grander, Eglise Saint Denis has that honour.
Built in the 1400s and consecrated in 1484, it was constructed upon the special orders of Louis XI.
Sadly, Louis was motivated more by personal interest than by religious or charitable grounds. At the time, the castle church also served as the parish church which meant that he had to attend mass with the great unwashed. At the time fear of the plague was rife and Louis reasoned that if he built a new parish church, he could keep the commoners and riffraff out of his castle church, therefore making it safer from disease.
The church has had some modifications over time but has largely retained its Gothic style. However the pretty, stained glass windows are not original. They were blown out in WWII and later replaced.
Inside, it was very quiet and with the exception of one other person, we had the place to ourselves.
This is only a brief stop but while you are here, look out for the colourful, modern metal sculpture by the American artist, Alexander Calder. It’s located around behind the back of the church.

Walking towards the old part of the town we found this church, which when it was open I went to visit. It's not big but it's pretty and it's worth visiting, making a stop along the way. It is a historical monument and is from the 21st century, I was able to learn little more about it

It is a very beautiful church, access is free and it is usually open. Right now there is an exhibition of pretty cool paintings.

L'église Saint-Florentin est une des deux églises paroissiales de la ville d'Amboise (37), située au sein de la vieille ville et au pied du château royal.

The Saint Florentin Church is in the shadow of its neighbor - the outstanding Castle above so it's pretty much overlooked by tourists.
However, before or after the Chateau visit do pay a visit when strolling this cute town. Very nice stained glass inside.

Cette église est transformée pour la moitié en lieu d'expositions et garde la partie du chœur pour le côté spirituel. Personnellement cela me dérange. Soit on désacralise l'église et on la transforme entièrement en espace culturel, soit on rend entièrement l'église au culte, mais pas les deux à la fois.

L'église Saint-Florentin, inscrite par les M.H. en 1926, classée en 1963, est un lieu d'exposition géré par la commune. En ces périodes de restrictions pour raisons sanitaires, pas d'exposition et donc l'édifice est fermé. A noter l'absence de signalétique informant les visiteurs des projets futurs de ce lieu culturel.
Cette église fut nommée Notre-Dame-en-Grève au moment de son édification, décidée au 15ème siècle par Louis XI, par soucis sanitaire. Il s'agissait de réduire les risques épidémiques en évitant que le peuple ne monte jusqu'à la collégiale Saint-Florentin située sur le site castral.
L'intérieur de cette église a été Modifié au 19ème siècle, des vitraux du Maître vitrailliste Max Ingrand ont été installés. J'ai tenté de profiter des extérieurs, même si les accès sont peu évidents, l'emprise des maisons du quartier empêche d'en faire le tour. Pour résumer, une petite déception, je reviendrai pour une exposition.
