On November 24, 2024, the accessible rooms were posted at the reception, a clever way not to mention the impossible access to those on the 1st floor, including the Lady with the Unicorn, which is still the main attraction! Practice also to ignore the strike by surveillance personnel and make it almost useless ... What a lack of elegance towards visitors and staff demands!

Due to job action (apparently) many of the galleries are closed this week, on an irregular basis. As a smirking young fellow at the entrance told me “c’est aléatoire, madame.” You can visit, but you will only see a fraction of the collection—and what you can see will be a roll of the dice.

A very nice historical museum with nice exhibits and room to view things. We got there with basically no line after going to another museum. A really nice feature of this museum is it has lockers for your stuff. It is a very nice museum with historical ruins, mostly pieces of art with some paintings. Almost every room was open but outside parts were not although you could look out windows. Notre Dame is supposed to open soon so there was a large area about ruins from there. Beautiful pieces of what I consider art and artifacts. My husband thoroughly enjoyed it and I enjoyed parts too. We did get off the track and had to go back and see some parts. I found it enjoyable. We spent a few hours there.

Small museum but with a rich history of the Roman city. It is worth going for those who like history and like to visualize the old times. It doesn't take long to complete the visit, but even after this stop going. The region of Saint Michel is beautiful.

With Notre Dame about to reopen and the glittering reds and blues of Sainte-Chapelle beckoning, the ponderously named Musée de Cluny-Musée National du Moyen Âge might easily be dismissed, even though it's nearby. Housed over the immense ruins of a Roman bath, the Musée de Cluny displays a millennium of art, the most spectacular of which is a medieval masterpiece: “The Lady and the Unicorn,” a series of six millefleurs tapestries depicting the five senses (touch, taste, smell, hearing, and sight). The sixth and largest is the most enigmatic: the Lady places her necklace in an open chest and, embroidered on the pavilion behind her, are the words Mon seul désir (“My only desire”). Woven in about 1500, the tapestries were commissioned by a wealthy counselor to Louis XI, Jean Le Viste, whose coat of arms is prominently displayed: three crescents on a diagonal band against a red background—or, more pedantically, “gules on a bend azure three crescents argent.” Perhaps the museum shouldn’t be dismissed after all!

I visited the museum on November 12th in the afternoon. Due to the next exhibition I knew I couldn't visit the frigidarium but I saw fewer rooms than expected! Due to lack of staff, some rooms are only visible in the morning (room 4 5 6 7 8 9 10). There was no notice on the museum's internet page. The room of the lady with the unicorn is still magnificent. But the bitterness for not having been able to admire room 5 is large.

The whole ground floor is closed for a few days: we visit only the 1st floor, in reverse chronological direction (we start from the rooms on the transition Middle Ages renaissance to end in the 13th century). The lady with the unicorn is clearly visible. With the darkness made necessary to preserve tapestries, the explanation panels are sometimes not very legible. You'll have to come back to see all the progress!

Beautiful museum especially enjoyed the exquisite tapestries! We have some beautiful unicorn tapestries at the Cloisters in NY but nothing like these! Very interesting history and the Roman baths outside incorporated into the museum.

Most of the explanations on the exhibits are in French, so it is undeniable that they are unsatisfactory to observe. Still, the museum's most notable feature, the "Lady and the Unicorn" tapestry, is well preserved and worth seeing.
According to the commentary on "How to walk the Earth", five of the six books represent sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch, while the other one is not understood. I feel more romantic when I have a mystery left.

The Hotel de Cluny in the Latin Quarter of Paris houses what is probably the largest museum in the world dedicated to the Middle Ages; in Italy itself the type is not very frequent, with some significant exceptions - I think of the Medieval Museum of Bologna - despite the importance of this historical era for European identity (and with good luck to the right-thinking today who use "medieval" as if it were an insult).

The Parisian museum is spread over several rooms of the Gothic palace, with very heterogeneous material, ranging from the sculptures of the Sainte-Chapelle to the famous tapestries depicting the Lady and the Unicorn. Among the sacred objects, the 11th century gold and gems frontal, from the Cathedral of Basel, is very remarkable; the painting collection is more limited, which however includes valuable works such as the Provencal Pietà di Tarascona (15th century); it is impossible in any case to remember all the remarkable works.

The organization of the visit, at least in July 2024 - a particularly critical period for Paris, conditioned among other things by the work on the controversial Olympics and a series of electoral rounds - is not very simple, with limited hours and some rooms closed on a rotating basis; for example, among the works on display I did not seem to see another of the masterpieces, the Golden Rose of Minucchio da Siena. Even the exhibition itinerary is not the most rational.

It is in any case a museum that is absolutely worth the visit, even if with some discomfort; the price, if not very low, is still adequate to the vastness and quality of the collection. As for the crowding, it must be taken into account in part, but it is not excessive compared to other Parisian museums; and at least in July the presence of noisy school groups was averted, or at least greatly reduced.
