If like us, you prefer to explore a city by walking then the 8th Arrondissement is perfect for a long stroll. Many of Paris’ main sights are found here.
We walked through the heart of the area, starting at the monumental Arc de Triomphe
From here, we strolled down the glamorous Champs Élysées, “the most beautiful avenue in the world”. Of course there were all the high-end, luxury stores you’d expect to see, but there were also a surprising number of regular mid-range brands of the kind you’d see anywhere. An enormous Louis Vuitton monogrammed suitcase several stories high caught out eye (it’s very clever hoarding to hide the construction of the first LV hotel).
As the shops petered out, we came to the Grande Palais. We stopped to look at its beautiful facade but the real highlight was the Petit Palais, opposite.
We took an hour out of our walk to go through this gallery which included works by Rembrandt, Rubens and a beautiful Monet.
Entry was free and we didn’t need to pre-book.
We were sorry not to have more time as we could easily have spent much longer here. It’s a great spot to have a break as it has a lovely enclosed garden courtyard with a cafe.
The second part of our walk down the Champs Élysées, was a lot greener. On either side of the Avenue, the Champs-Elysées Gardens creates a pleasant park-like space. Although there are no standout sights here, it’s a nice area with several statues, monuments and fountains.
We continued along the Champs Élysées which ended at the Place de la Concorde. The most prominent feature here is the Luxor Obelisk. We could see the obelisk from some distance, long before we actually reached the square. However what really caught my eye was the two stunning monumental fountains, adorned with beautiful sea creatures and mythical figures. There are tritons, neriads and dolphins spouting water. The closer we looked, the more detail we saw - intricate coral, flowers, shells, and fruit. I think these must be my favourite fountains in Paris.
The square marked the end of our walk through the 8th arrondissement, but from here it was easy to extend the walk and we continued on through the Tuileries Garden. If you walk straight down the main artery of the garden, it brings you out to the Louvre.
Overall, you’ll need to allow at least 2 hours for this walk if you include a quick visit to the Petit Palais). It’s long but its also very easy. It’s flat the whole way and even though you are walking through a very busy part of Paris, the pavements are wide.

We find this area perfect for a long walk up Boulevard Haussmann, taking in all the lovely architecture and then turn left at the Arc de triumph, venturing down the wide pavements of the posh Champs Elysées, finishing at Place de la Concorde.

PROS
* Central section with Arc de Triomphe
* This includes the famous Champs Elysees
CONS
Full of businesses and stores
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... to be at the arc de Triomphe and to ascend to the top. i didn't explore the Champs Elysees- i didn't do that in 2019, and that was enough for me then
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Even there, it is still free to be there
WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Of course I would return to the Arc de Triomphe again
ADVICE
Of course yo must see and visit the Arc de triomphe but be prepared and know that the Champs Elysees is just expensive stores and restaurants- see my previous "helpful" 👍 reviews of both of those

One comes here to see the Arc de Triomphe or to stroll the Champs. Otherwise the neighborhood lacks vitality and is especially quiet in the evening. Many of the grand apartment buildings have been converted to offices, so it becomes desserted when folks go home. Some high end hotels here. This used to be a popular upper class residential neighborhood, but since the apartments became offices, it has been very different. Don't come here for cafes.

There are several important monuments and museums here, so focus your visit on the Arc or the Museum of Modern Art. Otherwise so many of the apartment buildings in this area have been converted to offices that the area often seems empty. Not much street life.

It’s a very safe area . The ministry of defence is there so you’ll see many police officers and armed forces. And that’s a good thing.safety come first. There are not many decent coffee shops but a walking distance you’ll find the champs-élysées Paris where many cafe’s and shops are there .
It’s a quiet place not noisy at all .

The champs Elysees is probably the most recognised attraction of the area, deservedly so, however, the walk from Place de la Concorde to Pont d Alma, is a wonderful walk along the seine taking in the sights along the Promenade Cours de la Reine, then head in to see the rest.

How deep is the pool? Did I see a lake or a pond with a beach, or is that another villa haussman hotel photo that got mixed up with the others? Are taxis close by? Are cafes and entertainment close by?
