We have rented apartments in this area several times and love to return for the huge assortment of cafes, food shops, and restaurants. Some of the best food shopping ever. Very busy from lunch time forward.

If you find yourself with some time on your hands after museum-hopping, boutique shopping, relaxing in gorgeous parks, and walking along the Seine, this neighborhood is a lively, pedestrianised section of the city just north of the major destinations of central Paris. It is well worth a stroll among the many outdoor cafes, bars, and restaurants and it is surely a treat to see (and perhaps even to dine at) some of the local landmarks, including the Rocher de Cancale, where Honore de Balzac and his cohorts once hung out, and L'Escargot Montorgueil, which is said to have been the favorite restaurant of no less than Charlie Chaplin. Don't miss the atmospheric, narrower side streets and alleys, which tend to be less frequented. And if you need to refuel before your next destination, there are sweets on offer at Stohrer (# 51) , the oldest surviving bakery in Paris!

I love Rue Montorgueil, and it is one of my favourite streets in Paris. It just has that ‘real’ Parisian feel to it. It is extremely popular with ‘foodies’, and a place where locals come to do their food shop, as well as those running ‘food’ businesses - so much so that Quartier Montorgueil has been described as one of the last food-oriented neighbourhoods in Paris where you can still find a bit of everything.
Rue Montorgueil took its name in the 13th century from the hill it ascends – Mont Orgueilleux, or ‘Proud Mountain’. Its history really begins in 1183 when King Philippe Auguste created the central Paris marketplace, later known as Les Halles. Apparently a large shelter was built for the vendors to sell their wares, and soon merchandise was arriving by donkey and horseback from all across France. As the principal artery to Les Halles from the north, Rue Montorgueil became the road’s end for fish and oyster merchants who had travelled down from the coast to sell their produce. And today, even though it is only a hop, step and a jump from the bustling crowds of the Les Halles shopping centre and the Centre Pompidou, the Montorgueil district has a remarkably village-like feel.
Fresh produce sellers, family-owned fishmongers, butchers, green grocers, florists, bakers and fromageries are tightly packed along the semi-pedestrian thoroughfare, especially the stretch running from Metro Sentier down to Rue Etienne-Marcel. It apparently boasts some of the best meat and fish markets in the city, along with renowned coffee shops, cosy bistros, boutiques, and bars diverse enough to please hipsters and traditionalists alike.
It's always crowded, by locals, but it is frequently overlooked by tourists, who may wander into the area by chance but only rarely know to go explore the area. it should be part of your itinerary, especially if you're looking to explore Paris a bit off of the beaten track.
I’ve had great breakfasts here, feasting on amazing pain aux raisins and fresh omelettes. I’ve bought beautifully unusual and totally delicious cheeses here to take back to England. And I’ve had the best macarons I’ve ever had from a store here. It’s highly atmospheric, very lively, and oozes energy and vibrancy. It’s noisy, at times a bit tawdry, but its always fabulous!
It’s walking distance from Les Halles or the Le Centre Pompidou. The nearest Metro station is Etienne Marcel.

saberia me dizer o metro mais proximo ?

I will be traveling in November with my Mom who I will be pushing in a fold-up wheelchair (12” rear wheels). We arrive on a Wednesday around 2pm on the Eurostar and are considering going to Rue Montorgueil to walk around and get lunch. We are then heading to the Louvre. Is there another similar location that might work better on the way to the Louvre for a wheelchair? She is able to get out and walk short distances and up/down a few steps. Will the walking route from Rue Montorgueil to Louvre work for a wheelchair (ex: not hilly)? How successful might we be at hailing a taxi from the market area? I don’t see any good backup bus routes. The rest of our plan is Louvre to Champs Elysees area hotel (taxi or bus 72 to 73). Next day: taxi or Bus 73 to 62 Notre Dame, Then taxi or Bus 27 to 72 to Eiffel Tower, noon lunch at Restaurant 58 (Mom’s request) then Bateaux Parisians Seine cruise. Bus 42 back to Gare du Nord for Eurostar return trip @ 7:15pm. Does this all seem reasonable pushing a wheelchair in November? Are there better bus routes that I'm not finding? Should we just plan on all buses with the transfers or will we have a chance at finding a Taxi? Thank you.

streets can be navigated by wheel chair with some planning. Rue Montorgueil to Louvre is almost flat. There might be few steps to walk up and down the stairs because wheel chair ramps are not located is most places. The distance is about 1 mile.
I think you have too many locations to cover in a short time. Pace slowly to enjoy and not get too tired of walking / moving wheel chair etc.

Hello,
This is my 1st trip to Paris (58 years old) and I'd like to stay in this area as it looks so Parisian and I love food.
Since you've stayed 3 times can you share the Apartment rental information?
Do you think this area is better than the left bank or St. Germain des Pres?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Bonjour,

One of our classmates who is French took us to this street this afternoon...as we are studying at Le Cordon Bleu, so this area is a heaven for us as it has so many big shops. where we can find bakery items and even a bookstore named Gourmande where only the gastronomic books are sold...will come back this place next week!

The bookstore is at 92-96 Rue Montmartre and is called Librarie Gourmande. Wonderful place.
As for bakery items, suggest that if the large department stores aren't enough, they do have quite a range of speciality stores such as A. Simon at 48 and 52 rue Montmartre or La Bovida at 36 rue Montmartre or Mora at 13 rue Montmartre or Deco Relief at 6 rue Montmartre [seeing a theme here . . . all in the same Rue!!]. Enjoy
