When the tassels and brocades, courtly etiquette and official ritual of the Palace of Versailles became too suffocating, Marie Antoinette and her favorites would retreat to the simpler, more bucolic environs of Le Hameau de la Reine—or Queen’s Hamlet, secluded in the palace gardens not far away. There, an entire village had been constructed on the banks of an artificial pond: a farm with a working dairy, dovecot, and water mill—as well as a residence for the queen, a private boudoir, and a guardhouse. Modeled on the rustic cottages of rural Normandy, with their thatched roofs and half-timbering, the buildings belie their richly decorated interiors. In this tranquil setting, the queen could walk with her friends, play billiards, and host more intimate gatherings than would have been possible at the palace. She did not, however, play at being a dairymaid with beribboned sheep and a porcelain milk pail. (There is an explanation for the calumny: In 1783, as work began on the Queen’s hamlet, Louis XVI purchased the nearby Château de Rambouillet. There, as a surprise for his wife and an inducement for her to visit, he had an extravagant “pleasure dairy” secretly constructed to resemble the more modest one at Versailles, where guests could be refreshed with milk and soft cheeses—even ice cream. He also ordered a set of Sèvres porcelain for the dairy. Fabulously expensive, the service, which consisted mostly of cups and saucers, bowls and ewers, was more a showpiece than for general use—but it did include two decorative milk pails, each of which took at least a month to fabricate and were the most expensive pieces of all.) After the French Revolution, the buildings fell into disrepair and would have been ruined utterly had not John D. Rockefeller donated money for their restoration, as part of a larger scheme to restore Versailles. (Rockefeller also funded the reconstruction of Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia). And maintenance is ongoing; when we visited, a small scaffold still was in place at the dovecot. I would like to think that the hamlet was the queen’s favorite part of the entire sprawling estate—certainly, it’s mine.

Beautiful, this place plunges you into another time , to do absolutely, what magic , a great plus in visiting the castle park , the historic side of the cave adds even more interest in the place , the buildings are beautifully renovated, the mini farm is friendly and the site benefits from free toilets in the house of the gardener of the queen . To be repeated without hesitation.

This was an expected delight. Marie Antoinette’s fake Norman Village is fascinating. It is so over-the-top quaint because it is fake. It is like a Disneyland Norman village and that’s what makes it so strangely compelling.

Very pretty place, but the great distance traveled in the domain to see the small, the great Trianon, as well as the queen's domain is exhausting,
Certain lack of indications: we spent long periods of time going here and there, without markers, without arrows, without indications. The area is very large, be prepared to walk a lot! But a must-see place!

Unmissable, access is via the Petit Trianon garden (500m shaded walk)
It’s magnificent, very well maintained vegetable gardens and what a contrast with the fury of the castle, although not so far away!

I booked a skip-the-line Versailles guided tour on Saturday 25th of August. As indicated, it's a tour in the Palace, and does not include the gardens and Marie Antoinette's hameau tickets which I intend to see on my own immediately after that.
My question is: can I buy these tickets (for gardens & hameau) on the spot when I finish my guided tour or it's better to buy it in advance to skip the line since it might be crowded on Saturday? I mean, do I need to have skip-the-line ticket for the garden and hameau if I'm already inside the Palace?
I would appreciate your feedback.

Do you now (mid-2018) have to enter the Hameau as part of a guided visit, or can you visit on your own? And is there a separate Hameau-only ticket, or do you have to buy some sort of combination ticket? Thanks!

Is it possible to visit the interior of the Hameau de Marie Antoinette?
There is a tour that is offered of the Hameau in French. Does the tour visit places that are not open to the general public? Would the tour still be interesting to non French speakers?
