This was my first visit to the opera at Versailles but my partner visits fairly regularly when productions of Lully and Rameau’s operas are performed here. The building is stunning, just beautiful. The performance of “Armide” by Lully was amazing - I’m an ex-musician and was blown away by the marvel of this opera. A special mention to two people - Marie Van Rhijin who performed the harpsichord beautifully despite the onset of a sudden coughing episode (it was clear after the interval that she had a cold), and to Stephanie D’Oustrac whose incredible onstage presence & vocals in the lead role of Armide, stole the show. I look forward to returning. Highly recommended.

Looks stunning with floor rising mechanism. Still hosts concerts and operas. Part of guided tour, not open to public otherwise

The day of the tour, it was limited as they had a show later that afternoon so we had no access to the actual theater. However, there was an open door with a staff member standing outside, so we quietly went to her and asked her if we could take a quick peek inside; she did allow us to briefly watch a live rehearsal for a few minutes. It is fantastic inside. I imagine it would be wonderful to attend a play there.

Wow. The opera house is wonderful. We took a tour and saw so much. It is decedent and marvelous. We thought the phantom could be behind any closed door. The tour also gives you a little free time at the end to roam. We got same day tickets and were able to fit it into a full schedule.

Amazing place to visit if the crowds are low. We had a private guide which made our visit so much better with the information she told us.

Hi, we have tickets for an opera here in December, what was the dress code/type of clothes most people wore please? Thanks in advance!

Was there in June and I was surprised at the range — very formal evening gowns to t-shirts and shorts. Either of those stood out, not in a good way. Most dressed like going out for a nice dinner: Men wore suitjackets and pants (NOT jeans), ties were 50-50. Women nearly all wore a nice dress with either jacket or cardigan. Scarves, always. Remember that France is conservative so quality materials and little skin. Have fun!

Hey there, we booked a guided tour on the day at the Palace of Versailles. We arrived early in the morning to the palace, booked the guided tour and we just had to wait in this room for about 15 minutes. The Royal Opera part of the tour was towards the end.

Le confort des chaises des loges du balcons Royal sont acceptables pour un spectacle d'une heure, une heure et demie mais pas pour une soirée de 3h30 comme celle du Ballet Royal de la nuit, qui, de plus est ennuyeux. La musique Baroque du 17 ème n'est, à mes yeux, pas mise en valeur par une scénographie plus proche du cirque que du ballet.

Is it realistic to tour Versailles and attend a 20:00 performance in The Royal Opera on the same day? If so, what would be idea timing and itinerary? From Paris would it be more convenient to travel by train or car? Restaurant recommendations would be appreciated as well.
