This is one of those 'must visit' places which you actually do not want to visit. I knew the black history of this war crime site and I wasn't all too keen on go there.
And, once again (like Dachau and Le Paradis) I shook my head in disbelief. The systematic butchery of P.O.W.s by the SS never ceases to amaze or fill me with sorrow. And anger?
My hairs stood on end walking around that little area. What went through the heads of those poor, young & frightened Canadian soldiers, knowing that a bullet awaited them on the other side of the wal? And, don't forget this little "twist", the main building was an Abbey!!
I've read Hubert Meyer's 12th SS several times but he blames the PTSD hardened SS troopers, with Russia as their excuse, and not the whole SS machine. Don't forget, the Le Paradis 'affair' of the Norfolks occured in 1940, when Russia & Nazi Germany were allies...
To compound matters, the suspects, in the main, got clean away with it....

It's really just a small walled garden where the SS executed 20 Canadian POW's a day or two post D-Day, but it was among the very first war crimes to be tried in court. Very moving place. The abbey's family has done a nice job of honouring the murdered soldiers.

A number of Canadian soldiers disappeared during WWII and their bodies were discovered here. This is sacred ground and many Canadians come to visit their fallen relatives to pay honor and respect. Our historical tour group met the Madame of the Abbaye and she told us the story with an interpreter.

We went to the Ardenne Abbey because we needed to go because we were Canadians. It is a small memorial park where these Canadian soldiers were tortured and killed by the Germans in WW11. There is a plaque with the soldiers name and face on it ...a lot of Canadian flags. We stayed there for a while to remember them and you can sign a condolences book that is in the wall as you exit. Moving place in Normandy area

Hearing the story of the 18 Canadians murdered by the Nazis after being taken prisoner was heartbreaking. I can't imagine how frightened they must have been. People can be so cruel. Worth a visit, particularly for Canadians.

Atrocities of war are horrible and especially seeing our fellow Canadians massacred by the 12th SS Panzer Division shortly after D-Day during the Battle of Normandy. Revisited for the second time and the memorial here is quite moving . A must visit for Canadians visiting Normandy

The Abbey d’Ardenne was a stop on our guided tour today. Shortly after we arrived, an elderly woman walked into the garden where the memorial is. We found out that she is Mme Vico, a daughter-in-law to M. and Mme Vico who owned the Abbey during WWII. She shared many personal stories about the history surrounding the Abbey with us. In addition, Mme Vico also shared how we, especially our youth, need to learn from the history. It was one of the most moving experiences of my life. I will be forever grateful to have met her and listened to her personal account of this tragedy, WWII and the years that followed.
