The museum is located on the grounds of the Château de Caen and is dedicated to the history of Normandy, beginning with the Stone Age. The exhibition looks a little dusty. Probably nothing has ever been renewed in the last 30 years. Multimedia elements are sought in vain, for example. In addition, most of the lyrics are written only in French. Thus, the overall visit remained unsatisfactory.

We love local history museums and this didn't disappoint. Main interest for us were the social history exhibits upstairs - well worth 30 -60 minutes. Also visited the temporary exhibition about the archaeology and changing face of the Place de la Republique. Despite not understanding all of the captions this was a fascinating slice of history.

We took the city pass that gave access to this museum. I admit, without it, I wouldn't have gone. Besides, nothing extraordinary except the lace room.

Coupled ticket Museum of Fine Arts + Museum of Normandy = 8 €. Established in the former residence of the governors, it gathers archaeological collections (paleolithic, Gallo-Roman era) and ethnographic collections (especially on lace and ears of making). Not to mention educational showcases on housing and land use.

Nice museum showcasing the history of the Normandy region. Interesting info and lots of artifacts - even from the time of the Gauls. Staff was friendly. Restroom on sight. It's two floors with stairs or a lift to visit the second floor. Not very big but lots of information.

The Museum of Normady in Caen is, on account of the different interesting items exhibited there an appropriate place to learn about history of the region and, particularly, about divers features of its economy and peoples daily life from prehistory to the twentieth century. It was founded in 1945 and finds itself in the Caen Castle built in the eleventh century by William the Conqueror.
The Museum houses, in the Governor's Lodge of the Castle, a permanent collection of different types of items ranging from, as already stated, the prehistory, through the Roman period and the time of the different migrations to our epoch. The exhibits on Norman agriculture, particularly on the apple cider, are very interesting. Likewise, the items regarding arts and crafts, including pottery, woodworking and metal, clothes and textiles are worth seeing. In this respect, among such items, a weaving loom and a stunning wedding dress are really impressive. There are likewise a few nice and pretty paintings.
As far as the archaeological side is concerned, the statue of the mother-goddess is outstanding. It represents a woman sitting in an armchair with two children, one on each side. She wears a diadem and has two brooches and a tradition Gallic torque around her neck. It's really a fantastic sculpture.
During the visit to that Museum one may learn some special details on several exciting questions. For example, about the building itself, the use of the so called Queen Mathilde Tower. Some details on funerary matters, such as about the location of the cemeteries in the Roman times both in towns and in the countryside are also revealed. It's fascinating to know, for instance, in this field, that the grave sites were sometimes marked with a stela. The Merovingian coinage is also a gripping subject on which some details may be apprehended in the Museum. Another important point on which one may get a clear information concerns the presence of Vikings in Normandy.
The visit to that Museum is therefore worth the while. The personnel working in it are not particularly kind but if one is aware of that, some unpleasant surprises can be shunned.

We took advantage of our visit to the castle and the fact that it is the first weekend of the month so that entry is free to discover it. We enjoyed this visit which lasted around 1h30, the museum is well stocked and covers a wide period with a lot of objects, I was expecting more information on the evolution of the land and local traditions.

Es un museo etnográfico muy pequeño pero interesante. Se ve en algo más d media hora y permite saber un poco más sobre la vida tradicional en la región.

What days and hours is it open?
Can you see the museum in the morning and take a day trip to the beaches in the afternoon?

You will get a good appreciation of the Normandy Museum in the castle in Caen in a morning. I do not know the opening hours.
You may be able to drive through the five beaches and get a brief idea of the Cemeteries, Monuments and Museums in half a day, but you will not see very much. Even with a guide we did not see it all in two and a half days.
