We were there so we went in.
It is like so many cathedrals and in places quite sour and poorly lit.
Just one side chapel that I found outstanding, the one to Mary with a beautiful brightly lit statue of the Madonna.

This gorgeous church is beautifully sited above much of the area and is lovely inside. The beauty of the church is a comfort.

Notre-Dame des Doms is a must-visit destination in Avignon, especially if you’re looking for an unforgettable sunset experience. Perched atop a hill, this historic cathedral not only offers a deep dive into the region's rich religious history but also provides some of the most spectacular views in the area.
As the sun begins to set, the view from Notre-Dame des Doms becomes truly magical. The sweeping panorama of the Rhône River, the Pont d'Avignon, and the distant hills is bathed in a warm, golden light that creates a breathtaking backdrop. The changing colors of the sky and the landscape as the sun dips below the horizon make for an unforgettable experience, perfect for capturing stunning photographs or simply soaking in the beauty.
The cathedral itself is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, with its intricate details and serene interior adding to the overall experience. The peaceful ambiance within the church provides a lovely contrast to the vibrant colors of the sunset outside.
Whether you're an avid photographer or simply looking to enjoy a tranquil moment, Notre-Dame des Doms during sunset is a truly magical experience. It’s a highlight of any visit to Avignon and a beautiful way to end a day of exploring. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a blend of history, beauty, and unforgettable views!

Certainly not the most beautiful cathedral I have visited. The interior is not that interesting but was a nice place to sit down and rest from the heat outside.
Adjacent to Palace of Popes and easy to think it is one of the same.
Free to enter, also on route to the gardens

The originality of both religious and secular architecture of Avignon catches the eye almost immediately. I believe that the status of the so-called Papal City had a certain influence on both the city itself and its buildings and structures. Well, or the city of the Avignon captivity of the popes - those very 67 years when the residence of the Catholic high priests was located here. Since this status implied a certain confrontation with secular power, namely the monarchical power of various kingdoms, duchies, baronies, etc. surrounding Avignon, the pontiffs “sharpened” the city for possible battles.
This is precisely what explains the certain, à mon humble avis, fortification and defensive style of architecture of the local buildings. Moreover, starting from the residence of the Popes (Palais des papes d'Avignon) and ending with the main religious building of the city - the Cathedral of Notre-Dame des Doms d'Avignon. You can easily find the latter in the northern part of the Avignon intramuros, on the rocky outcrop of Rochers de Dome north of the city center, overlooking the left bank of the Rhone.
Surely you noticed the little-known word “intramuros” that I used? Coming from the Latin “intra muros”, which literally means “within the walls”, it implies that the Cathedral is located inside the ancient part of Avignon, which was surrounded by a fortress wall back in the early Middle Ages (and perhaps earlier?). Something like an analogue of the Kremlin of ancient Russian cities.
Chronicle sources that have survived to this day suggest that initially there was a group of religious buildings at this very place: Notre Dame itself, the parish church of Saint-Etienne, a Benedictine monastery, as well as a baptistery dedicated to Saint John. Alas, only the Council has “survived” to our time. And, of course, not in the form in which he appeared in the light of God in the 12th century.
It is generally accepted that the construction of the sacral began in a purely Romanesque style in 1150 on the site of an early Christian church of the 4th century, of which not a trace remains. But, what’s strange: in a number of French sources I came across an indication that the Cathedral was consecrated on October 8, 1111!!! Who to believe? I can assume that Notre-Dame des Doms in Avignon was originally built at the very beginning of the 12th century: this version is supported by the presence in the name of the temple of the word “Doms” - from the Latin Domo episcopali (house of the bishop).
The cathedral, destroyed by Arab invasions and local battles, was restored and consecrated, as I already mentioned, in October 1111. But since he was too modest, a decision was probably made to erect a new building, the construction of which began in 1150. In the 14th century it was expanded, in the 17th century the apse was rebuilt and two chapels were added on the south side of the Cathedral. It is not known for certain when the pyramidal bell tower of the temple was built, but it is definitely established that on January 27, 1405, it collapsed and crushed the above-mentioned ancient baptistery with its debris.
A couple of decades later, the clocher was restored, and in 1859, a four and a half ton statue of the Virgin Mary made of gilded lead was installed on its top. The Cathedral acquired its current appearance in the first half of the 19th century: rather “worn” by the ups and downs of the Great French Revolution, the temple was re-consecrated in 1822 and restored by the Archbishop of Avignon, Jacques-Marie-Antoine-Célestin Dupont in 1835-1842. If we talk about the architecture of the temple, then, to be honest, I have never seen anything like it in my travel experience.
But the author of these lines has more than eight hundred religious buildings from different countries, peoples and religions. Experts call the style in which it was built Provençal (or Provençal, I’m not exactly sure) Romanesque (roman provençal). I have had the opportunity to describe the Romanesque temples of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and, if you wish, you can read on this site my reviews about the basilicas of Notre-Dame du Port in Clermont-Ferrand and Notre-Dame d'Orcival, the churches of St. Austruman in Issoire, St. Nectarius of Auvergne in Saint-Nectaire and Notre-Dame in San-Saturnin.
All of them are in the Romanesque style. But nothing even close to the Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms d'Avignon!!! Can you imagine? Indeed, the Provencal or Provençal variety of Romanesque style in architecture is generally a separate “song”!!! At its core, as far as I understand, this very roman provençal actually embodies a number of stylistic features, elements and touches inspired by ancient architecture.
As for me, it seemed to me that the Avignon Cathedral looks little like the usual Catholic churches and is some kind of strange mixture of architectural styles (Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and even, in places, ancient Roman). This white marble “mix” is difficult to describe - knowledge is not enough...

The Cathedral was built in the twelfth century.
Its bell tower culminates with a large golden Virgin.
The exterior is impressive.
The interior is very bright.
The various side chapels, ceilings and sculptures are very interesting.
Outside, in front of the entrance there is a beautiful Christ on the cross.

The Cathedral is located near the Palace of the Popes and due to its position it is visible from many points. Architecturally it does not have a precise style. Externally you cannot fail to notice the bell tower at the top of which there is a statue of the Virgin. The interior has a single nave with several side chapels.

We saw this church closely during our visit to the closed city of Avignon on December 13. It is a large cathedral adjacent to the papal palace, its architecture is very beautiful, especially the golden statue on the dome, we could not visit its contents, we cannot find time for these when there are short nights.

Built in the 12th century, therefore before the Palace of the Popes, it is an important example of Provençal Romanesque architecture.
In 1859 the Statue of the Madonna was placed on the top of the tower, 6 meters high, which blesses and protects the city.

There are quite a few stairs to reach the entrance of the church from the Place des Palace - the cobbled square in front of the church and Popes' Palace. The sculpture of Christ on the cross surrounded by a few of His fellow mourners has a prominent place on the spacious entrance to the church. However, the golden Madonna on the church tower, very visible from afar, is more of a marker for the church. The white interior is quite simple as is the altar. The side chapel with Benedict XII's tomb is Baroque and dark. I just needed time for a few photos inside. There were no beautiful sculptures around the church entrance - just a covered porch in Romanesque style. Any wall frescoes seen were not memorable. Probably the exterior of the church is the most photographed.
