OUTSTANDING EXPERIENCE: If you have the time, DO IT!

Full-on learning, every moment you're there

! ! Bonne Journ e

I highly recommend this course to anyone serious about learning or improving their French. I was there for the first 4 weeks after the school reopened in August. I consider myself an advanced-intermediate but was put in the advanced level, the highest out of 7 levels offered. (They used to offer 8 and I imagine they will again as enrollment increases). There were 6 other students in my class, all but one who spoke more fluently than me. Even so, we all made the same mistakes, most of which were pretty basic, but which are hard to “unlearn” once they become engrained. The focus of the advanced class was not on learning advance tenses but perfecting things we should have mastered before and didn’t. Think direct object and indirect object pronouns, prepositions, and even pronunciation. The teachers are serious about creating an effective as well as fun experience for the students. It says a lot that 20% of the students I met were there for their second or third time!

The course is not cheap, and I can’t say if it’s right for you, but all 7 of us in my class thought the course was worthwhile, as well as the 7 in my husband’s Intermediate 1 class. Even the complete beginner students I spoke to loved it, and were speaking by the end of the course. The course focuses on spoken-structure, with very little grammar, and almost no reading or writing. Out of 55 students there were 5 from the World Bank and one from the CDC, with the rest were doing it because they either have moved to France or just for their own personal enrichment. My class had 4 Americans, and one person from each of Hong Kong, El Salvador and Sweden. My husband’s class also had 4 Americans, and one each from Mexico, Kuwait and China. Only French is allowed on campus from 8:30am to 4:45pm each day, including the light breakfast and very delicious 3-course lunch, which is provided.

I read all the old reviews before enrolling, but for me the reviews from the past year carry the most weight, as the institut seems to have spent some money upgrading the facilities. I’m looking forward to returning again some day!

I have just spent four weeks learning French at the Institute. It has been one of the best experiences of my life. My wonderful professors Frederic, Amandine, Julian, Edit, as well as all the other professors, have allowed me to greatly improve my French and have given me an amazing insight into French culture and life.

My classmates were amazing people, Villefranche-Sur-Mer is the closest thing to paradise (and all the Cote D’Azur actually) and food at the Institute and at the numerous restaurants in the area was to die for.

I can’t wait till I go back next year!

It has been a fantastic experience to attend l’institut de français. The location is stunning, the food served there is better than most restaurants and the teachers are incredibly friendly and fun.
Attending l’institut de français has exceeded all of my expectations and I can only give my warmest recommendations to go.
The school focuses primarily on developing skills within the oral french which is the area I have previously struggled with the most.

I just finished 6 weeks at the Institut de Français and I continue to be impressed with the quality and caliber of this immersion course! The Institut manages to preserve the pedagogy or teaching approach the ensures retention and quick progress in fluency while adapting and innovating to our ever changing times. It seems the school is invested in perfecting their approach and the results are evident! I saw advances in technology, the breakfast and lunch menu and of course, the individual classes. The size of the classes afford each student several opportunities to practice their speaking.
Beyond the classroom, the region is absolutely breathtaking! The blend of cultural activities, culinary fare and access to other cities along the Riviera coastline really makes the trip valuable, meaningful and memorable!

I just spent another 3 weeks at the Institut de Français—I was really happy to find it essentially unchanged from when I was last there 2.5 years ago—excellent instruction, really interesting other students, delicious food, and of course the magical setting of the Côte d’Azur.
I was so fortunate to be in Sylvie’s class—a gifted teacher, she began each morning on one topic, keeping us fully engaged as she seamlessly shifted to a related topic or two, then bringing us back full circle an hour later to the original topic, now reinforced in our minds.
It was only in the weeks and months after my first time at the institute that I realized how much I learned—and I sense the same is true this time. It comes down to the program—a verbal-based approach—and most importantly the instructors. I was in Evelyn’s class last time and like Sylvie, I found her to be an amazing teacher.
Is short, if you really want to learn to speak French, this is a wonderful program—you’ll come away having learned a lot, while having a great time doing so!

My husband and I just finished the one month session and it was one of the best experiences we've ever had. He came in having studied on his own throughout the lockdown (but having failed college French!), and I entered after having studied at Alliance Francaise pretty consistently for the past many years. We were both placed appropriately in classes that were right for us. Both of our teachers were absolutely wonderful: very experienced, gifted as instructors, and above all funny and engaging. Our fellow classmates were from really diverse backgrounds, from age 21 to 80's, and from all over the world (in my husband's and my classes there were people from China, El Salvador, Mexico, Kuwait, and Sweden). They were working (many from the World Bank, who sends many students every year) and retired. We all had in common a love of travel and intellectual curiosity which makes for a great self-selecting pool of possible new friends and a strong sense of community. The methodology, which includes strict rules about not speaking any other language than French while at the school, was in fact originated in the '60's, but the Institut has over the years modified it and adapted it. It's focused on oral communication rather than written work and "grammar" as it is normally taught in schools--unlike anything I'd ever experienced and very effective. I can't say enough about my teacher, who took bits of our before-class conversations and seamlessly integrated them into her teaching plan for the day, making the lessons seem very natural and showing us that the things we were learning were immediately applicable to everyday language use. My husband, reading this review, seconded me about his instructor. The days never dragged; I was engaged completely and looked forward to class every day. There's even a "seance pratique" daily in which we learned about practical language for dining out, shopping, food, talking about the news, etc. There's a bit of written homework each night to reinforce the items covered that day. Many of us with a little French under our belts remarked that it would have been great if we could have started at the Institut as beginners because it's a great way to learn.

On a practical level, the food was terrific--they feed you breakfast and a three course french lunch (which you eat at a table with one of the teachers) every day. We rented our own apartment instead of using the apartments available through the school--from my conversations with classmates, they can vary in quality fairly dramatically. Villefranche is a great town, but be aware that it's totally vertical and involves LOTS of stair-climbing, especially if your apartment is in the lower vielle ville. There are many really good restaurants in town and obviously tons in Nice, which is very convenient to Villefranche. As for COVID precautions, everyone in our cohort was vaccinated but we still had to wear masks when inside the hallways of the building (but not in class). If anyone got at all sick, at the first symptom they got tested (no one contracted COVID). Our temperatures were taken at the beginning of each day. We felt completely safe (and remember that the vaccination rate in France is much higher than that of the US and most other countries).

If learning French is on your list, don't hesitate to enroll at the Institut. It greatly exceeded all our expectations in every way.

This was, hands down, one of the BEST travel, cultural, educational, immersion experiences I've ever had.
•BACKGROUND: I've read a few that take shots @ the accommodations, the demanding schedule, the food, the "no phones" during the school day. Suffice it to say these folks have missed the boat & the point of the experience. The BEST candidates for this experience are those who have some exposure to/prior education in French. No matter how long it's been, their system of assessment, placement & immersion based teaching is amazing in it's capacity to get you SPEAKING & understanding GRAMATICALLY CORRECT FRENCH!!
•TIMING(there were limited time periods this app allowed you to select for your visit.) I was there for a 4 week session in Oct, 2019 BEFORE the pandemic hit. It was an ideal time of year to visit that locale--with most of the tourist/cruise visitors gone, restaurants easy to access locally on Villefranche + Nice & Monaco (easy trips in either direction on the regular, reliable train that runs right along the scenic coastline. Lovely climate~warm, sunny days in the high 70's/low 80s @ the start; mid-high 60s by month's end. Summer can be HOT, the town/beaches crowded. Winter into early spring is grey, many of the local shops/restaurants close. Late spring or fall is ideal.
•ACCOMMODATIONS: Arrange your own. You'll be staying a month~get what you want/need on VRBO/AIR BNB. There is a large array of options, most owners speak English & those I dealt with could not have been more accommodating. Confirm your proximity to campus BEFORE renting~it's an easy walk to/from class +a pleasure to start your day w/a a fresh croissant + cafe au lait or stroll home after a long day in class, take in the view & stretch your legs (LOTS OF HILLS). The charming town is easily navigable, has several daily fresh markets, bakeries & small groceries that make stocking a small kitchen easy if you don't want to eat out for every meal.
•CO-PARTICIPANTS: in my experience-this was another benefit of this program. We had people from their mid-20s-70s & everything in b/t. Not surprisingly many are middle aged 40s-60s (this IS the cohort w/the time, $$, flexibility to drop out of their normal routine & commit to a FULL-time European-based education program for 4+ weeks) & from every corner of the globe. In my 11 person class, the US, China, Netherlands, Russia, S.Korea & Australia were all represented. My classmates were generally engaging, well-educated & traveled, a delight to engage with & friendly groupings were quickly formed.
•PROGRAM: This is a SERIOUS, academic, time consuming, intellectually demanding course of study. The profs take this approach & EXPECT students to engage accordingly. You are assessed w/written & oral testing Day 1 & placed in a class @ a level determined by the staff. In the first week there is some shifting, but MOST placements were spot on. Classes start promptly, there is daily homework, you are expected to attend class, speak, ask questions & be instructed ENTIRELY in French. Even casual conversations held on campus (at meals, b/t classes, at certain extra-curricular events) are EXPECTED to be in French. There is a variety of techniques employed, but TRUST them, this is a well-crafted & proven process. It works! There are also many extra curricular offerings: films, various tours, wine tastings, music/cultural/museum events, group dinners, etc. Participate! It enhances the education + the experience. Profs mostly are excellent, long-term vets, have high expectations & low tolerance for tardiness, lack of preparation, disruptions/chatting/phones in class. They view themselves as professionals & expect students to respect their time, their classes & take the Institut seriously. If you do so, you will be delighted by your progress when you take your final evaluations.
•CONCLUSION: My experience, after a referral from a friend, was better than I ever imagined. I would have returned again in fall '20 but for the coronavirus pandemic & hope the Institut is able to keep its doors open through this challenging year+ so I can return.

Second time there and could feel innovation happening and the staff making effort to take care of all students. Great atmosphere and the food was delicious! :-) Most important part, yes... I learned a lot and practise this still today whilst living in France. Highly recommended.

Attended twice. The first time was a superior learning experience. The teacher drilled us over and over on grammatical constructions. There was no hiding in her class, as she picked on all of us every day. She was strict but did an excellent job. She was one of the best teachers I have ever had. The second time the teacher did few drills and just lectured, or I should say performed. She had a few student pets she catered to, and I was not one of them. I complained but nothing could be done, making my experience horrible. The implication was it was my problem and not hers, though I have always gotten along with my teachers all the way through my post graduate professional degree. At the graduation ceremony she angrily glared into my eyes as she gave me my certificate. I mean it was obvious. Overall the school is excellent and most teachers there are excellent. I just ran into one who hated me and was frankly very narcissistic.
