A walk of about 10-12 kilometers along the Elbe (particularly pleasant) allows you to reach the city of Hamburg.
Throughout the walk you will find places to take small breaks.

Hey folks,
Climbing stairs is a lot of fun here and a scavenger hunt is especially fun, as you should count the stairs when five pages later you are asked how many steps there were to get here 😄😂
Here and there you can also get a glimpse into kitchens, living rooms and sleeping quarters.
Well, the Süllberg has something and around it is the typical staircase district, really and originally Blankenese, a must and lovely to walk.

Great part of Hamburg. The S1 takes you from the main station to Blankenese in 20 minutes. The 'stairs' to the Elbe are an experience, past great houses and great architecture. Once you get to the bottom, you can take lovely walks along the Elbe and see a lot. It can happen that you suddenly run into 'Otto'.
If you've had enough, take the 'mountain goat' and go back to the S-Bahn station.

We went here on the Subway from Hamburg. Unfortunately it was raining, so didn't spend as much time here as we wanted. Loved all the steps in the town. Went to the little beach and ferry port and saw the lighthouse.

4.5 stars. I very much enjoyed this place; I think people who like the beach would rate this five stars. The Elbe River is not fantastic, but it is nice to walk along the beach with the backdrop of absolutely gorgeous homes. Not a lot of cheap food options here, but I think it comes with the territory. My friends and I loved hiking in the forest to uncover a Roman garden, picturesque mansions, and beautiful greenery. A friend of mine even foraged some blackberries after we napped on the beach. There is also a lighthouse where one can look at the Elbe; there are a lot of industrial boats on it, unfortunately. Great memories.

Graceful, flirtatious coastal views, pretty fishermen's houses, white villas with flowering front gardens: the staircase district on the Elbchaussee awakens Mediterranean dreams.
Fashion shops, cafes and restaurants dress up, beautiful photo opportunities tempt you to climb around on the steep slopes. Finally, walk along the beach and say hello to the lighthouse and fishing boats:

Magnifique promenade depuis le terminus "blankenese” du S1 jusqu'aux rives de l’Elbe. Une fois descendu du promontoire on longe les rives de l’Elbe sur 12 kms. Prévoir de bonnes chaussures. Sur la route on peut s’arrêter pour une pause casse croûte ou juste pour un verre. Mais le retour jusqu’au métro U3 est long. Nous avons fini par prendre le bus 111 pour nous rapprocher de la station de métro. D’autant que nous avons eu les 4 saisons en 5h de trajet. L’arrivée sur Altona est magnifique par la piste piétons vélos. On y longe de magnifiques maisons avec petit jardin et plage privée.

1. Does the driver/guide give a commentary in English, does he/she stay with the group, are there many stairs to navigate, will we be taken back to the wharf where our ship is berthed at the end of the tour?

Dear Robert, sorry for my delayed answer - i was traveling :-)
Yes - no problem the driver can go down to the riverside of the elbe by car, you can walk a little bit, up the stairs also and later on go back to the city ... look at the Hamburg Tourism side for Blankenese

As I will travel with my grandparents who are too old to take those steps, wonder is there any other way to visit the town but avoiding those up and down steps?

Hi JLhippie,
you can take the "bus" #48 from trainstation "blankenese" which is going directly to the river Elbe where you dont need to walk down the 4500 steps :-)
By the way, just to clarify, "Blankenese" is a outer part of Hamburg and the only part where you have huge number of stairs and not such nice escalators as in HK ;-) the rest of hamburg is easy for walking...
