You can feel the history of this place. We enjoyed it very much (as much as you can enjoy pure evil)

When booking excursions for Hamburg, off a cruise ship, this place was a "must do"! We were blessed to have a guide on our bus who had actually worked at Neuengamme. He did not sugar coat, he had knowledge and passion, having interviewed from prisoners from the camp. That made our experience above what most will have, but there is so much to read and experience on your own!
On arrival you will see rectangle areas of rocks, held together by edges of wire. These are out lines of what were, at the time, wooden camp buildings. On the right are various camp facilities. To the left are the barracks. At the entrance and at the rear are two large, brick former barracks. The Nazis plan was to make this a permanent camp once they won the war.
The far, long brick former barracks has some amazing exhibits - you could spend several hours reading. But it is emotionally exhausting! Seeing the clothing samples given to them is hard to take. That was for year-round - even in freezing weather.
You will be better served to do some research prior to your visit. I knew from my
research of the use of prisoners hired out for work to many German industries. Slave labor by many well-known (even today) companies! Slave labor for international companies apparently is not new!
Toilets are at the entrance. Don't miss the memorial. It is the tall shaft on your left as you enter. Note they close at 4:00

First, just to save someone a taxi ride (ours was about 28 euros), the bus 127 and 227, right outside the train station at Bergedorf, will take you there. However, each only runs once per hour. They are, however, about 1/2 hour apart so you should not have to wait more than 30 minutes. Do not cross the street, these buses will pick you up on the same side of the street as the station. At the center, they will tell you what times the buses come for the return trip (currently 8 minutes and 35 minutes after the hour). You currently get to Bergedorf on train 21 from Hamburg, which runs about every 20 minutes on platform 4. Download the hvv app and you can pay for your ticket online.
Now to the Memorial itself. Wow. Incredibly informative, mindboggling, sobering, and maybe depressing. While we learn of Auswich and the exterminating camps in the US, little is taught about the workcamps where thousands of war prisoners, jews, and people from conquered countries were basically worked to death or died from starvation, tuberculosis, cold, or other diseases, not to mention beatings, shootings, and executions. One man was arrested for playing "swing music". While much is translated, there are extensive stories in German. We did not rent the audio tour but were still extremely impressed and satisfied with our tour.
Did I mention it is free?
Just an FYI, there were classes of high school students who arrived and left by bus, although we all fit on the bus.
Often called the "forgotten camp" by the Germans, I highly recommend a visit here. We spent just short of 3 hours and did not see the entire grounds. It is massive.
We cannot forget the abuse of unfettered power, ever.

I would suggest train and then bus as this would be cheaper than getting a taxi as you can get a ticket for both together. I'm unsure of which buses and trains you would need to get but if you go on Google maps and put in your starting place and then the concentration camp it will tell you all of the information you need to get there via public transport. This is what we did.

Hi, we are going to be in Hamburg on the Caribbean Princess cruise ship on May 5, 2016. I cannot find any tours to take us to the camp and I would be very interested in visiting the memorial. Do you know of any tour company in Hamburg that would offer this? I am a bit reluctant to take public transportation.. Thank you.

Hello,
I don't know where your hotel is but transportation in Hamburg is fantastic and you will be able to reach the camp by train and then bus. I had never been to Hamburg before and figured it out very easily. Good luck!
