While we were visiting cologne, we took the bus here. It is wonderfully manicured graveyard. Many interesting graves. We used google to learn the story of the people. Nice place to sit and relax in the shade.

Beautiful green oasis, fascinating graveyards

il is at the same time a walk through a beautiful park and a walk through time, from the million alley where the celebrities and rich people are to be found, up to “the Senseman”. it makes sense to decide beforehand which tombs to look (online map) at as the cemetery is quite large

Bomb spoiled the visit

Was so looking forward to visiting and seeing the cemetery sculptures but it was not to be . We easily got there via a tram but a guard at the entrance told us we could not visit as the had found a bomb . I didn’t believe him at first but we had previously done a WW1 battlefield tour where they explained that finding bombs is a fairly regular occurrence in a previous war torn area .

Park mit morbidem Charme

Der Friedhof Melaten lädt zunächst zum Spaziergang ein. Alte Bäume spenden auch im Hochsommer Schatten, das ist sehr angenehm.

Der Blick auf die Grabmale ist ein Blick in die Geschichte. Manche Gräber hingegen erzählen Geschichten. Es lohnt sich, den Blick links und rechts schweifen zu lassen.

Es gibt Führungen über Melaten, dazu kann ich jedoch nicht berichten.

Fotografen finden hier so manches Motiv.

Un cimetière dans un parc arboré.

Ce cimetière n’est un des plus agréable que j’ai pu visiter. C’est un immense parc avec des tombes de toutes époques autour de vous.
Nous y sommes restés 4 heures et nous n’avons pas tout vu.

visiting a friend's grave, but beautiful spot for the mourners

Paying my respect to a friend that died recently and found it to be peaceful and lovely. the grounds are well maintained and it's quiet.

Sehenswerter historischer Friedhof.

Ein großer, nahe der Innenstadt gelegener Friedhof mit sehr langer Geschichte, der die Geschichte Kölns und seiner herausragenden Persönlichkeiten seit der Reformation, v.a. aber im 19. Jahrhundert, und zugleich bis in die Gegenwart spiegelt. Auch architektonisch interessant. Ein Spiegelbild der Kölner Stadtgeschichte und der Erinnerungs- und Begräbniskultur der letzten 200 Jahre.

Glad to have made the visit

Having seen some nice photographs posted on TripAdvisor, I was keen to go for a look. Enjoyed a brief wander, beautifully maintained and some lovely sculptures. Didn't see all I would have liked... Would require a longer visit. Glad to have been.

Exceptionally beautiful cemetery

...so serene and peaceful...incredibly nice sculptures everywhere, a lot of natural green...if you are looking for some peace and “zen”...this is the place to visit!
