While most of Colgne's modern architecture is quite ugly due to the need of replacinf the flatted buidings from WWII, these buildings are a bit more interesting. Quite next to the center, they are a most welcome deversion of the comparable ugly city center.

Whether from the water or on foot. The special architecture of the crane houses is always worth a visit and a photo. It is precisely the contrast to the historic buildings that makes up the additional appeal.

Nothing to add to the majority of previous reviews. But be warned, these are two commercial blocks plus one apartment block. You can't go inside, there are no viewings or drinks /eating facilities.

Like most dock area's throughout Europe in the 1980's & 1990's the dock area of Cologne fell into disrepair through economic woes but then it reinvented itself, one of the landmark features of this city and this waterfront location is Kranhauser Im Rheinauhafen.
These buildings were constructed to resemble giant cranes ,a feature most common on the docks in days gone by ,very photogenic, very emblematic and most definitely well worth checking out if you're planning a holiday to Cologne.

The three crane houses in the Rheinauhafen are certainly not an absolute must for visitors to Cologne, but from an architectural point of view they are certainly interesting and worth seeing. They can be easily combined with a walk along the banks of the Rhine - for example, the main station - Hohenzollern Bridge - right bank of the Rhine - Severins Bridge - crane houses - left bank of the Rhine (e.g. back to the main station).
