The Teutonic Knights were given land, by the Archbishop in 1216, on what is now called the Deutsches Eck, to build a hospital and monastery. Their order came to end in 1802 when French Revolutionary troops occupied the city. These buildings were all destroyed during the bombing raids of WWII. Only the 4 storied white house remained usable. This house was the Teutonic Knights' Grand Master's administrative building. It is very noticeable with its white facade, red trim around the windows, and 5 sided tower on both the Konrad Adenauer Ufer - beside the St. Castor Basilica - and on the Peter Altmeier Ufer - beside the equesterian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I. The red cross of the Teutonic Order can be seen over the entrance door to the art gallery - The Ludwig Museum - which it has now become. Ludwig Museum is named after the well known art collectors who established a modern and contemporary art museum in the Deutsches herrenhaus.

A portion of the old medieval walls can still be seen by the Deutschherrenhaus, most noticeably on the Peter Altmeier Ufer where the walls have not been covered with vines. The display of Spring flowers in the garden next door between the Ludwig Museum and St. Castor Basilica was lovely even though the Horticultural Show for which it was developed had long passed.

The features of the Deutschherrenhaus can be conveniently seen as one strolls the promenade walks along the Rhine and Moselle rivers by the Deutsches Eck.

If it weren't for the special exhibitions the Ludwig Museum hosts one really could not
recommend to visit there. Their „permament“ collection on the top floor is tiny and consist of mostly minor artists that present themselves in a wide array of styles and media. We were lucky in June of 2019 to catch an exhibition by LED artist Deng Guo Yuang which offered a range of colorful LED installations in all shapes and sizes. One almost had to wear sunglasses in face with all of this artificial light! The second floor featured an exhibition of small fantasy toy figures by the same artist that were arranged in mobiles or on mirror cubes. Overall the place is rather average and has little in common with the large collections one can see in big cities but check out the special exhibitions. You may just be in luck like we were.

The Deutschherren or Deutschordenshaus in Koblenz was the first branch of the Teutonic Order in the Rhineland (a Roman Catholic religious order founded end of the 12th century). The site was referred to as the “Deutscher Ordt”, later as the “Deutsches Eck”. With the construction of the Kaiser Wilhelm I monument in 1897 the name “Deutsches Eck” was applied to the area of the confluence of Mosel and Rhine just North of the Deutschherrenhaus.
Since 1992 it houses the Ludwig Museum with contemporary, mostly French, art.

Quite a contrast, this museum houses modern art, this time it was Pierre Soulages. M Soulage used a great deal of black in his paintings. An experience.
