Loved wandering the Saturday market. What great people watching. So many products to see and enjoy. It's strawberry season, and they were so beautiful. My only regret is that I wasn't confident enough with my German to go buy a box to take with me. Had I planned ahead better, I would have come armed with a few phrases and euro-cash.
I particularly liked how relatively quiet it was. No loud music or boisterous acts. I was able to just enjoy the market.
Keep an eye on the time. We went into a cafe for lunch with the market in full swing, and came out an hour later with the whole plaza empty of stalls.

As a Meenzer, whose great-grandmother already had a flower stand at the Mainz market, to write about the advantages of the market would be like bringing Weck, Worscht and Woi to Mainz.
The month with the most regional offers is September, when there are not so many summer fruits and vegetables as well as autumnal ones.
I usually go on Fridays, when there is not so much going on, but all the stands are there.
Honey, mushrooms, cheese, vegetables, fruit stands, nothing is left to be desired.
My special recommendations:
Bremerhaven fish stand
Incredibly delicious fried herring, fish rolls, garlic shrimps, cod and so on.
For Worscht, there is also warm meat sausage at the stand, and organic meat from the Korschelt butcher's shop in Zellertal (only on Saturdays) and the Hamm butcher's shop in Stadecken.
Super tasty bread at Kaiser.
Salad, vegetables, regional at the Reinheimer from Ginsheim 2 huge stands near the cathedral.
It is best to always buy seasonal products and enjoy what you can create with them.

Very large square with the cathedral (or at least the shops which are against the cathedral) on one side and opposite a group of pretty old houses. Too bad this set is spoiled by ugly more recent constructions. Very beautiful fountain.

The Markt is the main square in the historic center of Mainz. Usually home to markets, this always very lively square is overlooked by a series of very beautiful and characteristic buildings, among which the Duomo, the houses of the cathedral and the Chapel of San Gottardo stand out on one side and a series of typical buildings which host many bars and restaurants on the other side. Also in the square it is possible to observe a significant number of symbolic monuments of the city, such as the Renaissance market fountain, the column of nails, the Heunensaule and the statue of San Boniface. A beautiful square, to be seen and experienced at all hours of the day.

I’m not sure how it is the rest of the week, but it was busy on the Saturday that I was there. There was a farmers market going on, a beer garden, and wine drinking section. Lots of people milling around. I was surprised to see a patch of wildflowers blooming in the midst of the Markt. There’s also some great views of the surrounding historic buildings.

The very beautiful market square in Mainz is a must-see and a magnet for visitors to the city. We therefore clearly recommend the market square as a top tourist attraction!

Der Markt von Main ist, verglichen mit den Märkten in Frankfurt, riesig. Es gibt hier nicht nur Obst und Gemüse, auch für das leibliche Wohl ist bestens gesorgt. Wir haben den Trubel an einem schönen Sommertag, sehr genossen.

Very much the centre of the old town with some interesting buildings, including the cathedral. Of course there are the usual cafes. For us the most interesting feature was the sandstone Renaissance fountain Marktbrunnen. Lovely. Unusual and worth seeking out.

This is the main market square in the Old Town where there are lots of vendors, shops, and restaurants. The cathedral dominates the area.

There are thousands of square similar to this all over Europe. On a day with no market, it is just a boring square.

Yes, of course Mainz has got a Christmas market. It will take place
Nov 29th until Dec 23rd 2018 on the central squares around the cathedral, namely Höfchen, Markt, Liebfrauenplatz. It opens
Sun till Thu 11 a.m. - 8.30 p.m., Fri und Sat 11 a.m.- 9 p.m

The Mainz Market opens Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Next week instead of Good Friday it will be open
on Thursday.
It is best before the last hour when the stalls are filled with everything you could wish for.
