On the highest hill in the city stands the imposing and majestic Almeria Monumental Complex, not only the largest fortress built by the Arabs in the Peninsula, but the construction that gave its name and was the origin of the current Andalusian city.
The blunt anatomy of the stones of this spectacular castle once served as a menacing beacon for ships venturing along the Spanish coast of the Alboran Sea. Now, the Alcazaba is the main reference for Almerians and foreigners to orient themselves in the streets of their city.
Above all, the Alcazaba is the hallmark of the neighbors of Almeria capital and even of the entire province, because when Abderramán III had this magnificent defensive building erected there in the 10th century he called it simply “the watchtower”, which in Arabic is written as Al-Mariyyat, a word from which derives the name of the luminous easternmost capital of Andalusia.

Well worth the effort of walking up the steep hillside.
Its disappointing that the tourist sign takes you out of the way!
We asked a local eventuality who directed us just steps from from where we were and it was straightforward.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and recommend.
Its very interesting and has great views.
Many areas are being restored and are restricted but there are still areas of interest.
Whilst steep in places it's not impossible and worth the effort.
Not all information is in English.
Contractors are on site
If in the area we would return.
Obviously a lift would make it perfect!

Building in good condition, the visit is nice and very nice. Plus in April there weren't too many people. Free for Europeans.

What an amazing site to visit with views across this small city. The scrubby areas & lack of upkeep around the edge of the castle almost add to it's charm. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Almeria

The Alcazaba of Almería is an impressive historical site and a must-see when visiting the region. Here is our detailed review:
Good points :
- Rich History: The Alcazaba is one of the largest fortified complexes in Spain and is full of history. Built in the 10th century, it offers a fascinating insight into Moorish architecture and culture.
- Magnificent architecture: The site is a true architectural marvel, with its imposing walls, towers and well-kept interior gardens.
- Panoramic views: From the walls you can enjoy spectacular views of the city of Almería, the port and the Mediterranean Sea. This is a great place to take photos.
- Peaceful Gardens: The Alcazaba Gardens are a haven of peace, perfect for strolling and relaxing. They are well maintained and add a touch of greenery to the historic setting.
- Free entry: Entrance to the Alcazaba is free, making it an accessible activity for all visitors.
Points to improve :
- Signage: Signage could be improved to help visitors better understand the history and different points of interest of the site.
- Accessibility: Some parts of the Alcazaba may be difficult to access for people with reduced mobility due to stairs and paved paths.
- Limited information: Although the site is impressive, more detailed information panels or audio guides would be useful to enrich the visitor experience.
Conclusion
The Alcazaba of Almería is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and architecture. Despite some small possible improvements, it is a magnificent place which offers a fascinating dive into Spain's Moorish past. Don't miss the opportunity to discover this historic gem and enjoy its breathtaking views.
The downside, however, remains the restoration which is not done identically. I would have preferred to pay 2 or 5€ per person so that we could have the means to restore this monument according to the rules of the art.

This is the big castle up on the hill. You can see it from the waterfront and from your cruise ship. It actually looks better and more interesting from afar than up close. You have to walk up a big hill to get to it.

Your visit is recommended. Enormous fortress that surprises us with its grandeur, its solid walls more than five meters high and its impressive defensive towers. Magnificent views.
There are three walled enclosures, two of Arab origin and style and a later, Christian one.
Your visit is free, the space is spacious, which is why you should take it easy.

If you pass by it's the only thing worth seeing in Almeria and it's also free if you're European. Beautiful view, short and pleasant visit.

Hola!
