As a first-time hiker, I made the mistake of not reading up on the AllTrails App properly. If I had done that, I would not have started the climb to the top. There was an unbelievably beautiful view up the mountain. Did not implement, but I will return more prepared.

Mega cool trip with fantastic views, nice hike. Can be difficult to park, so choose the smallest car you can.
Remember water - preferably 1 liter per person on hot days.

Last weekend I did the challenging hike to the top of La Concha from Istan with my 18-year-old son. This route is certainly more challenging than the better-known climb from Refugio de Juanar near Ojén, but it is a great adventure!

Our trip started with a short drive from Marbella to Istán, a picturesque drive of about 30 minutes. We parked at the Altos de Istán hotel, the starting point of our tour, located at an altitude of about 350 meters. Ahead of us was a climb of approximately 900 vertical meters to the top of La Concha, located at an altitude of approximately 1,250 meters, with a total hike distance of 12.5 kilometers.

Armed with a few snacks and 1.5 liters of water per person, we started the steep climb. In 2021 I did this hike in the summer, and 2.5 liters of water was not an unnecessary luxury. It is also advisable to apply sunscreen and wear a thin sweater or fleece. While climbing you quickly get quite warm, but there are also parts in the shade where it can be quite chilly. Pay close attention to the weather forecast, because you don't want to do this route if it is raining. We both had shorts on, and that was fine. You will come back with some scratches on your legs from all the bushes, but I prefer that to long pants. Good fitness is not an unnecessary luxury here, some parts are really steep! Along the way we stopped occasionally for photos and to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

This route, less busy than the one from Refugio de Juanar, offered us a peaceful walking experience. We met no other hikers until the top. The path is marked with yellow-white stripes on rocks and reflectors – a handy guide to not getting lost, as happened to me in 2021. The route goes over various ridges and peaks.

The highlight (literally and figuratively!) was the spectacular trip over the ridge of the Cepillo de Enebro to the top of La Concha. Left and right abysses and a view that will take your breath away: Gibraltar, the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, Malaga, Marbella, Estepona, and the Concepción reservoir. After a well-deserved 20-minute break at the top, we started our way back. This one was faster, but still required caution due to the risk of slipping. It took us about 5.5 hours in total, including a stop of over 20 minutes at the top. 3 hours for the outward journey and more than 2 hours for the return journey.

This climb with my son was an unforgettable experience. If you have the chance, consider the outbound route from Istán, and the return route to Refugio de Juanar for an easier descent and more variety in the landscape, including a beautiful forest. Highly recommended!

I’ve hiked and climbed many places, Patagonia, the Andes, New Zealand, the three peaks in the UK over 24 hours, and more, but La Concha was by far the toughest! Don’t let anyone tell you it’s a few hours, you will need an eight hour day, the entire hike/climb is 95 % rocks and boulders. It’s is steep in places, dangerous and then the drop below is on narrow ledges, a couple of places have chains to help you across. The views all the way are beautiful. If you have bad knees, this may not be for you, otherwise strap the knees up well. The stones are marked to guide you along, but they are poorly marked, you may lose your way, we did, resulting in us taking a more difficult climb up. On return we heard shouts for help in Spanish (Ayuda) we helped two young boys completely lost 2.6km from the exit down below in pine trees, no clue where they were, it very grateful.
It feels like three mountains, but the summit and views from the top are breathtakingly stunning.
Tips:
Do take plenty water
Do take lunch pack, snacks, some sugary snacks/drinks. You’ll need them
Do take a sun cap and glasses
Do wear proper walking shoes, or ankle supported trainers, it’s tough terrain all the way up and down
Don’t go alone
Take repellent, the summit has wasps galore, it’s not the place to eat
Stop to enjoy the views because you’ll be busy looking down trying to navigate the rocks and boulders
If you get lost retrace your steps to the last marked stone, it worked for us

Noce view, good 2 hours walk from the parking lot. Important to have good shoes and bring a lot of water. 1,5 hours back to the parking lot

Great hike but tough in the summer months. Views are spectacular and scenery gets better all the way to the top. 14k return from Refugio de Juanar to the peak and took just under 4hrs. First few k’s are relatively easy and shaded but last 4k is open and very rocky underfoot. Make sure you bring at least 2 litres of water and a good hat / bandana to absorb the sweat (would recommend hiking boots / poles but not essential)

La Concha mountain dominates the skyline behind Marbella. It’s stunning to view from every angle. It’s only for the adventurous to climb it!

The internet and the sign posts lie. It’s a day hike. Don’t listen to anyone or anything that says it’s a couple of hours. It’s not. It’s 6-8 hours. Don’t listen to idiot about taking “some light snacks”, you need food, actual sustenance. We took 4 litres (2 each) of water and drank every drop, glad we had more in the car.

All the internet reviews that say get there early, parking is limited. There’s four bays, we got there at 8am and took the last one.

If you’re a wee bit wobbly on your feet, stay away, we do a fair amount of mountain walking and we both found this tuff, difficult terrain underfoot most of the way. The route is marked very sparsely with white and yellow parallel lines on rocks, the route is very difficult to find a lot of the way up. And yes, the chains are a bit scary.

If you don’t die of heat exhaustion or fall off the edge, the views on the top are spectacular.

Started at 7:30 in the morning from the Refugio parking place. I am 52, fit and only had a bottle of water and some food with me.

It is really a tough one. 7 km each way with 850 m + height gain. 80% of the way you walk over rough stones and you need to watch every single step.

Parts of the way are very narrow paths on mountain edge and some areas are equipped with chains to hold on.

Very easy to get lost as the trail crosses long ways over solid rock - you cannot follow a path.

Amazing views on a clear March day, looking from Fuengirola skyline in the east until Gibraltar, Ceuta and the whole Moroccan coastline.

It‘s a beautiful scenery but you have to be able to climb rocks using both arms and legs and walk on the edge.
