It seems pretty well known so I’m not sure this would qualify as a hidden gem, but it was surprisingly quiet when we visited, which really enhanced the experience. Be sure to look up their opening hours as they do shut in the afternoon before opening again later. The decorations of the basilica are breathtaking, and you can also walk around the sacristy. Entrance fee is very reasonable as well. They offer guided tours, but only in Spanish at the moment

This is a magnificent space, with beautiful paintings by Spanish masters including Goya, and Velasquez . The dome is particularly impressive.

The Basilica is built in neoclassical style and very large. In addition to the speed of the chapels, the strong point certainly remains the paintings of the dome, which make one remain enraptured. Paid entry.

The facade of the Basilica looks rather sober.
You get a wow feeling inside
the size of the dome, one of the largest in Europe, but especially the frescoes by Fransisco de Goya (1746-1828) are overwhelmingly beautiful.
Not free, but definitely worth it.

The Real Basilica de San Francisco el Grande is a stunning church that should not be missed in Madrid. It was constructed in the second half of the 18th century and stands near the less-impressive Cathedral. The crowning glory of the basilica is massive dome, the third largest in the world, behind the Pantheon and St. Peter's in Rome. The dome is 33 meters in diameter and 58 meters high. For me, the six side chapels were especially striking, each more grand in their own right than the vast majority of churches in the world. Don't miss the small gardens next to the basilica... incredibly gorgeous!

Took pictures of the outside. It wasn’t open when we went but will check back during the daytime. Loved the rose garden on the side and the view of the city.

Unmissable, not only for its dome, but also for the entire building and the richness of its side chapels.
Access to the sacristy yourself in different corridors with walls covered with paintings and portraits
Free access, but visiting hours to be controlled. (We went there via station 14 of the “Madrid cityTour”)

Not far from the royal palace and the cathedral of Madrid there is another very interesting church too. It doesn't look much from the outside with its neoclassical facade - but the interior is breathtaking!
Built at the end of the 18th century, it has been enlarged, restored and rebuilt several times and is now a national monument; and it was consecrated as a basilica in 1962.
The real surprise is the dome - we have no idea that it is so big - 33m wide and 58m high; and therefore one of the largest circular domes in Europe. In fact it would be the 3rd largest after St Peter's and the Pantheon in Rome.
There are also beautiful paintings - by Spanish painters Zurbaran and Goya.
At the rear stretches a large monastery which can be clearly seen when looking at the basilica from the cathedral side.
Free entry and the visit can easily be done in half an hour.

Website says church Opening time is 8:00am-10:30am. That doesn’t seems right…only 2.5 hours a day? Anyone understand the opening hours on its website?
