If you visit Cosenza I recommend visiting the castle. An earthquake damaged the norman castle but Angevins rebuilt the destroyed parts. It is well preserved and, considering the Bourbons period too. Moreover, you have a great view of the city from above.

Vista mozzafiato su tutta la città, tanti eventi per tutti i gusti e non solo in estate. È stata una fortuna averlo riaperto e valorizzato! Da visitare!

Percorso ben costruito, elementi e dettagli che ti fanno viaggiare nel tempo. Dall’esterno non attrae ma in realtà merita una visita, i bambini hanno vissuto il percorso grazie al depliant che ci hanno consegnato in biglietteria come una caccia al tesoro.

This was a truly memorable visit - not just the experience of such an ancient building with its vast history but for the sheer kindness and thoughtfulness of the staff who manage the facility. We arrived at the very end of an afternoon - our first day in Cosenza and it was blisteringly hot. Exhausted but keen to see the castle. With just 20mins before closing, we were given a reduced price ticket and told to enjoy our visit - no rush! When we got to the top of the castle, the views all around are truly spectacular and you can immediately see why the castle was built where it is. One of the guides came up and talked us through what we could see giving us the best tips of what to see, do and visit during our short stay in Cosenza. He reaffirmed that we should not rush to leave but enjoy. When we got back to the entrance, the lovely lady who had given us our tickets insisted on driving us back down into the town. She chatted about how much to the heatwave - unusual for June - was affecting everyone. Thoroughly recommend a visit here!

Castillo Normano stands proudly over Cosenza, perched on the hilltop immediately overlooking the Calabrian city’s old town. I’ll admit I didn’t even know it existed when I found myself there, but as soon as I did I made a beeline for it.
Now, first things first, it’s a hell of a steep walk. Like regardless of weather conditions prepare to sweat. Once I traversed this, I found myself at the ticket office, manned by a very helpful and friendly young man, where for a small fee I gained access.
The castle itself is actually fairly small, but does offer a fairly spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding area should you get to the top. There’s a small picturesque courtyard section that they were in the process of decorating for some form of show.
Indeed, perhaps that was one of my issues - timing. Not that I didn’t enjoy my visit, I did, but it is a very small structure, and a lot of it was taken up by workmen setting stuff up.
Issues is a strong word though. This is a nice historical structure, and while I would definitely recommend anyone visiting Cosenza to stop by it, I couldn’t honestly say that it’s worth visiting Cosenza for the sake of seeing.

Muito interessante visitar esse Castelo dos anos 900 e que resiste ate hoje. O Castelo passou diversas restruturacoes. Se prestou a diversos servicos: moradia de reis e princesas, sede militar, foi prisao e serviu tambem a igreja. Hoje e o simbolo da cidade de Cosenza, um museu e fornece o espaco para eventos culturais. Para entrar e preciso pagar uma entrada de 4 euros. Vale a pena visitar, la tem muita historia.

Sulla sommità del colle Pancrazio è il Castello Normanno-Svevo di Cosenza. Su una “(…) motta artificiale di forma rettangolare, il cui orientamento rimanda alle tipiche forme utilizzate dai Brettii.” (dal depliant illustrativo del castello).
Con i Normanni e gli Svevi mantenne funzione militare, con gli Angioini fu sede principesca, sotto gli Aragonesi divenne Zecca di stato, prigione ed infine seminario, con i Borbone divenne infine un carcere. Attualmente, completamente e ben restaurato, oltre ad essere un importante luogo da visitare, comprende un bar-caffetteria, uno spazio eventi attrezzato per incontri, spettacoli, proiezioni, laboratori; è gestito dalla società Svevo (ingresso 4 euro, ridotto 2). C’è anche un ascensore che raggiunge i livelli superiori (ma lo abbiamo trovato non funzionante).
La visita comincia dalla parte destra dove, dopo un pozzo, probabilmente di epoca romana, si passa nel cuore del castello: la sala delle armi e la sala del trono. Evidenti sono le arcate sostenute da costolette colonnine che si incrociano nella volta. Molto belli alcuni capitelli in tufo decorati a fogliame e posti su corte colonne laterali.
A sinistra, invece, uno scalone settecentesco (probabilmente realizzato nel periodo in cui la costruzione era destinata a seminario) porta in alto, sugli spalti e sulla torre ottagonale. Sa qui si gode una veduta ampia sulla città vecchia, su quella nuova, sul corso del Crati e del Busento, ed anche su tutto il territorio circostante. In antico doveva essere un elemento davvero importante per il controllo dei percorsi, dei passi e delle rotte civili e commerciali; uno snodo decisivo, importante e assai ben controllato.

The long sweaty walk up the hillside notwithstanding, this castle was a nice little detour during my down time. Tough there is very little to “see” in the castle remains itself, the audio tour provoked some interesting historical research for those inclined. Even I may do a little more digging into the Sabeans.
The castle tour is worth the views of the city alone, and can help a sole traveller with out a map (io!) get his bearings in spotting some landmarks.
Take water if your scaling the hill in summer months!

Siamo rimasti molto delusi per aver trovato totale assenza di informazioni circa la chiusura del castello, rilevabile solo sul posto o pagina Facebook. Non è piacevole per un turista non averla possibilità di visitare tale ricchezza. Delusi anche dalla quantità di spazzatura abbandonata in ogni angolo della città

Da giovedì 25 giugno saranno riproposte le visite guidate dalle 9:30 alle 13:30 e dalle 15:30 alle alle 19:30 il costo è di 4€ intero e di 2€ ridotto! Spero sia stata utile!
