The Cathedral of Reggio Calabria is a neo-Romanesque building located in the square of the same name. Of recent reconstruction, due to the bombings of the Second World War, inside it is in Romanesque style and is divided into three naves. Beautiful works present, beautiful exterior facade. To visit.

More than 1000 years passed when was built the first church with Greek-Byzantine cult , in 1061 the arrival of Normanni changed the cult in the catholic of Roman Church.
The cathedral we can see today is a modern building dated 1932 , the original churches were destroyed by invasion, fire and earthquakes.
The last earthquake of 1908 damaged too much the previous church so they decided to rebuilt it in a Gothic-Norman architecture

Guided tour with many explanations, the Basilica, did not fascinate me at first glance, because it is rebuilt with dictates based on criteria of grandeur, then looking at the chapels full of worked marble I had a different perception. The thought then flew to ancient times when I saw the remains of the column tonne that according to tradition would be that of the Prodigy of St. Paul (he had to spread the faith in a short time until the candle placed over the column was extinguished .... but finished the candle also burned the column and his preaching was considered miraculous ..

Unfortunately destroyed by the earthquake, the reconstruction is truly horrendous, it looks like one of those Las Vegas buildings that mimic European beauties

Beautiful, majestic, central, architecturally appreciable, but above all the center of the faith of the people of Reggio for Maria SS Assunta. The ceiling is worth admiring

The old cathedral, which perhaps dated back to the 11th-12th century, was a Gothic building but was destroyed in the Messina earthquake of 1908. Rebuilt in 1917 and finished in 1928, it was inspired by Romanesque canons such as the large façade with the two statues (S . Paolo e S. Stefano), work by Francesco Jerace.
The same author was responsible for the marble pulpit decorated with two travertine palms from the old cathedral.
The interior, which has 3 naves, houses some tombs of bishops dating back to the seventeenth century, the interesting baroque chapel of the SS. Sacrament and two marble slabs of Papal Bulls (of Pope Paul VI from 1978 and Pope John Paul from 1980).
The coffered ceiling is particular where swastikas are depicted which, naturally, have a different meaning from those of grim memory.

Hi, I just visited Reggio for the first time. My Great Grand Parents, Grandparents and Aunts and Uncles survived the 1908 earthquake and emigrated to the US in 1909. I have a photo of most of them in front of a tent after the earthquake. When we were in Reggio we read that only 5 buildings survived or partially survived. Did the Duomo survive? You mention in your post that it was rebuilt.
Does anyone know if records survived, if so where could I ask questions?
