Walking up Capitoline Hill is an excellent way to see a lot of ancient Rome. There are several routes you can take. This time, we started at the famous Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verita), passing ancient temples and the Colosseum-like Theatre of Marcellus before hitting the Cordonata Stairs that lead up to Piazza Campidoglio and the Capitoline Museum the top of Capitoline Hill.
It’s only a 15 minute, mostly flat, walk but of course there’s a lot to see along the way so we took much longer.
Approaching via the Cordonata Stairs is by far the best way to go. This was the formal entrance to Piazza Campidoglio so it is designed to impress.
At the base of the stairs, are a pair of ancient Egyptian lion fountains and at the top, enormous statues of the ancient Greek gods, Castor and Pollux stand either side of the staircase.
At the top, the piazza unfolds in front of you. Look in any direction, and most of what you see here was either designed or re-designed by Michelangelo in 1536.
The piazza is enclosed by three grand palazzos, two of which house the Capitoline Museum (a wonderful museum if you have the time).
In the centre, is the imposing equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. You can’t miss it.
On the other hand it’s easy to miss the much smaller statue (but even more famous) statue of Lupa Romana. You’ll immediately recognise the iconic image of the she-wolf who saved the twin boys, Romulus and Remus. It’s at the back of the piazza on the left hand side of the Senatorio.
Both statues are only replicas and the originals can be seen inside the Capitoline Museum. The replicas however are very good and of course, it’s free to see them.
To the right of the Senatorio building, look out for a small enclosed, bridge between buildings. We discovered that if you walk out this way, you will come to a large open ‘balcony’ area that looks down over the Roman Forum. You can see a lot of the Forum from here, without having to pay to go in.
Overall, if you have the time, walking up to the top of Capitoline Hill is a brilliant thing to do and it packs in a lot of sight-seeing.

Capitoline Hill is the hill to the northwest of the Roman Forum and the site of numerous historic attractions and interesting things to see when visiting the city today. This is where you find the the elegant Piazza del Campidoglio, important Capitoline Museum, Basilica di Sant Maria in Ara Coeli and imposing Monument to Victor Emmanuel II. There are quite a few monuments to view upon and around the hill and endless ruins scattered through the excavated forum grounds below. Views from the elevated areas towards the Colosseum and Palatine Hill are really nice from here as well.

Even though it is the smallest of the famous seven hills of Rome, it is certainly important and evocative.
Home to many institutions, it is a place that smells of history but also of modernity.
Breathtaking panorama to admire the city from above.
The staircase to go up is a real marvel!

The vistas over the hill on which this cute little plaza sits offer nice views of the bustling street and neighborhood below, whereas the opposite direction is the way to access the Roman Forum and the Via dei Fori Imperiali. Surrounding you are great museums to explore. It’s amazing that even though the location is so optimal, I sense not as many visitors to Rome know about this urban spot compared to the must-sees and must-dos. The lack of crowding makes an experience feel more personal.

Walking up Capitoline Hill is an excellent way to see a lot of ancient Rome but you need to have a bit of time up your sleeve. It’s only a short walk but it is a steady uphill climb and there are a lot of sights along the way.
i) We started from the Vittorio Emanuele II Monument. There are a number of ways you can take but we found that this was a good starting point. First, we went up the stairs to watch the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and to take in the panoramic view from the balcony terrace level.
ii) From here, we followed the road to the right of the Monument which took us uphill, along the outside walls of the Roman Forum.
iii) We stopped at the Mamertine Prison where we had excellent views down over the Forum, the Temple of Saturn and the triumphal arch of Septimius Severus. This can all be seen from the elevated roadside so you don’t actually have to enter the Forum.
iv) The highlight however is when you reach Michelangelo’s Piazza del Campidoglio at the top of the Capitoline Hill. This whole piazza was and its surrounds were designed by Michelangelo in 1536. A central statue of Marcus Aurelius (the only bronze equestrian statue to have survived from the classical era) is encircled by the three grand palazzi that make up the Capitoline Museums. Even without going into the Capitoline Museums, there is a lot to see here. It’s packed with historically significant statues including the famous she-wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus. A monumental staircase, designed by Michelangelo for the triumphal entry of Charles V in 1536, is flanked by prominent statues of the twins, Castor and Pollux, the children of Zeus. At the bottom are two black ancient Egyptian lion fountains.
v) On the way back down, we walked out behind the Palazzo Senatorio, passing under the small but picturesque covered bridge, that looks much like a Roman version of the 'Bridge of Sighs’. A short way past this, was a large open ‘balcony’ area that looks down over length of the Roman Forum. Here we had a panoramic outlook and again, we could see a lot of the Forum without having to go inside.
Overall, if you have the time, this is a brilliant walk that packs in a lot of sight-seeing.

I will start with visiting colosseum, after I will go palatine hill and forum .can I go from the ancient ruins to the capitolino directly and then go down steps to piazza Venezia?Or I have to go around first at piazza Venezia and to go up from stairs?
撰写日期:2016年10月24日
You can honestly do it either way. I highly recommend getting the two day pass for €12 for Colosseum, Roman Forum, & Palantine Hill. Capitoline is close to the Palantine too, but everything is within walking distance—1-1.5km.

If we do not want to buy tickets for the museum is it worth only to climb? We are coming from Fiumicion to our B&B Bettini and then we want to start explore Rome, I was thinking about starting from Capitoline Hill - how long does it take?

It definitely is worth it, we didn't get tickets for the muesum either.
The view is simply breath taking. It's a must in Rome.
