The Civic Museums of Piacenza are housed inside the Farnese palace and represent a museum center of absolute importance as well as vast. The visit begins with the halls on the ticket office floor, among which stand out those of weapons and medieval frescoes. Second stop is the art gallery, housed on the first floor, where the highlight is the splendid room dedicated to Botticelli. The last stops of the visit are then the small prehistoric section, with access from the courtyard and the archaeological one, set up in the suggestive basement of the palace. Last, certainly not for beauty and importance is the rich exhibition of carriages, with which the visit to museums ends. You can also come across any temporary exhibitions. Personally I really enjoyed visiting these museums and I consider them absolutely unmissable for anyone in Piacenza. Full admission ticket at €10, reduced to €7. Friendly and non-invasive staff. Bookshop at the entrance, cafe absent, there are only a couple of vending machines for snacks and drinks, nice seats on the porch. For those who want to organize a visit to these museums, a time availability of at least 2 hours should be considered.

Museum that ranges from ancient weapons to paintings (including a Botticelli), from archeology to carriages... all housed in an important historic building. Interesting visit and friendly staff that allow you to understand the history of the area.

The imposing Palazzo Farnese, home to the museums, is located in Piazza della Cittadella, just outside the historic center of Piacenza. It would be worth coming here just to see the palace, which, although incomplete, or perhaps precisely for this reason, fascinates the visitor.
The museums are distributed over three floors (the ground floor, the first floor and the underground floor), fully accessible thanks to an elevator and some goods lifts.
Inside the Archaeological Museum, which is located in the fascinating basement, is the famous "liver" of Piacenza, a bronze model of sheep's liver used by Etruscan haruspic priests for divinations.
Also in the basement, the Carriage Museum is an absolute must-see.
Finally, inside the art gallery, a beautiful painting by Botticelli is exhibited: the Madonna adoring the Child with the infant Saint John.

Truly rich and well organized museums. A visit of at least two hours should be planned. The guided tour is recommended. However, it is difficult to see everything at once. Among the various sections, the one dedicated to carriages is very interesting.

We visited Palazzo Farnese and its museum. The palace is perfectly preserved. Impressive both outside and inside. The museum is very interesting in all its parts (personally I liked the art gallery with the beautiful Botticelli and the carriage museum). The staff were very kind, present but not intrusive.
Definitely worth a visit.

The imposing palace houses various museums inside, including the art gallery where the Adoring Madonna by Botticelli is exhibited, continuing with the archaeological museum where the Etruscan Liver is exhibited and finally the carriage museum. Very well organized museum, on the first Sunday of the month the ticket costs €1 and it is possible to take free guided tours of the various sections. Well done.

Palazzo Farnese is a historic palace in Piacenza. Located in Piazza Cittadella, it houses the city's civic museums as well as the provincial headquarters of the State Archives.
Various collections are part of the civic museums housed inside the palace: a medieval section including a series of frescoes from Piacenza churches, the archaeological museum, housed in the Visconti citadel which houses the Etruscan liver inside, a collection of ancient weapons brought together at the beginning of the nineteenth century, a series of carriages donated in 1948 by Silvestro Brondelli of Brondello, the Farnese glories, a series of works created to celebrate the Farnese family and of which only part of the cycle remains in Piacenza, the Risorgimento museum, the art gallery, a series of sculptures and a collection of glass and ceramics.

So we'd read some good reviews of this museum and from the outside you don't necessarily get a scale of how big this place is inside. But once you're inside, you do get an impression of how the aristocracy of old used to live a far better life than all the other minions, because the size alone of this palace and all it's different parts from basement up to the top level is insane.
The palace is located in the centre of Piacenza so is easily accessible from other key tourist spots like the pretty cathedral. It has now been split into several individual museums, so once you've paid your very reasonable entry fee, you could spend as little as an hour, or easily all day walking through the different sections of the various buildings, which also surround a large inner courtyard, which I believe is used for events including weddings and is a beautiful and majestic setting.
The museums are well staffed and in certain parts we actually had a member of the team explaining what we were seeing and where we should walk to next to ensure we didn't mess some of the best bits. The artwork and artefacts held here are stunning, some of them no doubt are almost priceless as they are irreplaceable and represent important parts of Italy's history, or that of the country before it even joined up to become what is now known as Italy. (the only downside is that the staff couldn't really speak English but this didn't detract from the amazing exhibits). Indeed, one of the most fascinating parts of the museum was the old carriages museum which was a whole part of the museum dedicated to the mostly horse drawn carriages used by royalty and aristocracy back in the day. And the quality of paintings and vases and weapons in this museum is incredible.
Genuinely one of the most impressive and more unique museums I've ever been to, and a must-see for any visitors to Piacenza.
