In front of the Town Hall, and walking among its porticoes and in the internal courtyard, you take a real journey into the past! Even today its extraordinary architecture, which dominates Piazza Cavalli with its majesty, manages to revive the magical medieval atmosphere. The prestigious building was built in 1281 at the behest of Alberto Scoto, chief of the merchants and lord of the city, and today it is one of the most illustrious examples of medieval civil architecture.

The Town Hall, known as the "Gothic" due to the prevailing architectural style, dominates Piazza Cavalli, the main public space of the city.
It was built in 1281 at the behest of Alberto Scoto, chief of the merchants and lord of the city.
It was made by local workers and perhaps from Como.
The building is in ogival Lombard Gothic style. It has a frame adorned with arches and dovetail battlements. The façade has a central and two lateral turrets. Palazzo Gotico is an outstanding example of medieval civil architecture. In fact, it has a large room suitable for hosting meetings of representatives of the municipal government.
It is characterized from the outside by a high marble base, opened by a loggia with arches and a pointed arch. The upper floor, with Romanesque shapes, has full-centre arches pierced by slender triple-lancet windows.
The contrast between the pink marble of the lower floor and the terracotta decorated with geometric motifs of the upper windows creates an effect of surprising elegance.
The statue of a Madonna and Child, dating back to the century. XIII, it was once located in a niche in the facade. Now the original is preserved in the Civic Museums of Palazzo Farnese and in its place there is a copy.
In 1351 the palace hosted the poet Francesco Petrarca.

Beautiful medieval civic building. The contrast between the lower marble part and the upper brick part is very impressive. The three- and four-lancet windows framed by decorated arches and the battlements to close it all are very beautiful. Certainly one of the best in the world of its kind.

Monumento non finito, bi-colore. Uno dei simboli di Piacenza. Molto bello da fuori; all'interno non abbiamo potuto visitarlo.

L'edificio, imponente nonostante le volte a sesto acuto che caratterizzano la parte inferiore del palazzo, attira senz'altro l'attenzione del visitatore e non potrebbe essere altrimenti: già il contrasto cromatico tra il piano terreno (in marmo bianco) ed il primo piano (in mattoni rossi) non può non attirare l'attenzione anche del turista più distratto, anche se, come nel caso della mia visita, la visuale è disturbata dai numerosi banchi del mercato settimanale

Il Palazzo gotico è l’attuale palazzo comunale di Piacenza ed è il fiore all’occhiello in Piazza Cavalli. E’ definito palazzo gotico in quanto è lo stile che lo rappresenta nella maggior parte (palazzo frutto di diversi rifacimenti nei secoli).
E’ un bellissimo palazzo di epoca medievale e ben rappresenta la città. Purtroppo non è possibile accedere al salone interno a meno di importanti meeting o convegni.

Edificio storico della città di Piacenza che sorge in piazza dei Cavalli. È in stile gotico-lombardo come la basilica vicina ed ha avuto, tra i tanti privilegi, ospitare Francesco Petrarca

Il Palazzo Gotico, che troneggia in mezzo a Piazza Cavalli, è unico. Edificato nel nel 1281 è tra i più importanti monumenti civili medioevali e colpisce per la differenza tra la parte inferiore, con ampie arcate in marmo rosa di Verona, e quella superiore, in cotto rosso, merlato e alleggerito da trifore e quadrifore.
Peccato non sia aperto e visitabile.
