Like the picturesque Piazza San Matteo, this square also has a medieval atmosphere. The grain market once took place here, while the name derives from the fact that there were also money changers' stalls that occupied the porticoes of the buildings.
Destroyed in the 14th century (1398) by a devastating fire in 1398, it was only in the 16th century that the restoration of its palaces was completed, including the construction of a merchants' lodge indicated as the headquarters of bankers and money changers and in 1855 it became the seat of the first Goods and Securities Exchange in Italy.
Also noteworthy is the small Church of San Pietro in Banchi, an original religious building located above commercial establishments and commissioned by the population who wanted to build it to fulfill a vow.

Nice little square with a couple of second-hand book kiosks, I think, surrounded by alleys and a very pretty church, from which you can take cool photos. It's on the way to the Cathedral.

Small square in the heart of the historic center, overlooked by important buildings, first of all the church of San Pietro in Banchi. Busy at all hours, also because of the "banks" which in some way are still preserved as a legacy of the traders' posts that give it its name, and which were already there in medieval times.

Quando arrivi a Genova ti accorgi di essere in una città poco accogliente soprattutto quando sei nel centro storico
Soprattutto il week end il centro storico e in mano a spacciatori e degrado ! Topi che escono ogni angolo ! Ti salvi nei giorni settimanali perché gli uffici sono aperti . Nel complesso la mia esperienza genovese è stata negativa sotto ogni aspetto . Sconsigliata

Nel mio ultimo giro per Genova di pochi giorni fa, sono passato a rivedere questa piazzetta medievale (peraltro nel centro storico di Genova è una delle poche piazze), vicinissima al porto.
Deve il suo nome ai banchi dei mercanti e dei cambiavalute che vi stazionavano, successivamente spostati nella Loggia dei Mercanti, ancora usata per esposizioni e mostre.
Ancora oggi vi si trovano bancarelle di libri usati e di souvenir.
Secondo la leggenda, San Pietro sbarcò qui per venire a evangelizzare l'Italia e sulla piazza sorge l'insolita chiesa di San Pietro, costruita sopra negozi ancora in esercizio.
Deve il suo nome ai banchi dei mercanti e dei cambiavalute che vi stazionavano, successivamente spostati nella Loggia dei Mercanti, ancora usata per esposizioni e mostre.

Conozco muchas plazas y mercados en Europa, todas tienen algo en especial, como ésta. Junto a Piazza Ferrari, son destacables. y una larga lista de lugares hermosos.

When I first stepped foot in this piazza I felt something different. Besides the locals using it as a passage to other places, the piazza has shops as well. There is a 15th Century Church of San Pietro, raised above the street level with its two bell towers as a backdrop. It draws tourists like me to this piazza. Happy Travelling!

E' una delle mie piazzette preferite di Genova per il suo carattere popolare, spontaneo, non a misura di turista, in cui trovi bancarelle di libri e dischi, gente del posto che dialoga in dialetto, giovani che cantano e suonano, tnegozietti da paese nel senso migliore del termine e gente, folla, a tutte le ore del giorno.
Oltre alla Loggia dei Mercanti spicca la Chiesa di San Pietro in Banchi, da non perdere.
