I've wanted to see you all my life, for a reason I don't want to reveal here for privacy. Quiet neighborhood of Milan. If I could, I'd live in that neighborhood. The abbey compared to other abbeys in Chiaravalle has a slightly different architecture.

I often go to the Basilica of Chiaravalle, it is a mystical place that allows you to "absorb" positive energy that makes you feel good, especially in the early hours of the day. It's a place of peace. In addition, the shop offers excellent quality food products (especially bread) and religious items, the bar a great coffee.

The Abbey of Chiaravalle (in Latin, Sanctæ Mariæ Clarævallis Mediolanensis, also known as Santa Maria di Roveniano) is a Cistercian monastic complex located in the Southern Milan Agricultural Park, between the Vigentino district and the Rogoredo district. Founded in the 12th century by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux as a branch of the Clairvaux Abbey, an agricultural village developed around it, annexed to the municipality of Milan in 1923.
The church constitutes one of the first examples of Gothic architecture in Italy and thanks to the reclamation of the land and the hydraulic works of the monks who lived there, it was fundamental for the economic development of the lower Milanese area in the centuries following its foundation. On 10 October 1134, the first Cistercian monks arrived in Lombardy from the locality of Moiremont, near Dijon, and settled in Coronate near Pieve di Abbiategrasso, founding the Abbey of Morimondo. Another group of Cistercians, coming from Clairvaux, arrived in Milan at the beginning of 1135, guests of the Benedictines of Sant'Ambrogio, in support of Pope Innocent II in the dispute against the antipope Anacletus II, who was then also opposing the rest of the Lombardy against the city of Milan.
Bernard of Clairvaux, having arrived in the city of Milan, convinced the Milanese to support Pope Innocent II, putting an end to the papal dispute and the long war that had pitted Milan against the rest of Lombardy. Out of gratitude to the saint, the Milanese authorities undertook to build a large monastery; construction then carried out by Bernardo himself, who positioned the complex five kilometers from Porta Romana, in a marshy area, later reclaimed by the monks, south of the city called Roveniano or Rovegnano. He then left a group of brothers on site with the aim of raising funds for the construction of the church. The first buildings built by the religious were temporary, and only between 1150 and 1160 was construction begun.

The Abbey is located in the municipality of Milan and yet, when you get there, it seems like you are catapulted into a country parish church. Only by looking up towards the horizon can you see the signs of the metropolis, but at the Abbey you are immersed in peace and tranquility. The complete guided tour is absolutely worth doing: our guide (unfortunately I don't know his name) accompanied us for 2 hours on a journey through history and art. Very knowledgeable and above all very passionate. Highly recommended.

Historic Abbey located on the outskirts of Milan. Exciting and well organized visit. The Abbey shop is very well stocked and offers a wide choice of products at absolutely correct prices. We will be back.

This morning, returning from the nearby cemetery where both my parents and two of my aunts rest, I noticed, passing in front of the Abbey, that the scaffolding, which for years had surrounded the "ciribiciaccola" (as the Nolare tower is affectionately called - that is the central bell tower of the Cistercian abbeys-) have been almost completely removed, after years of maintenance and reinforcement work on the structure.
Now the tower has returned, except for some scaffolding at its base, to stand out over the surrounding fields.
Beautiful structure, an oasis of peace a stone's throw from the city; the monastery is still inhabited by 16 Cistercian monks.
Absolutely worth seeing!

The Abbey founded in the 12th century. by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, and populated by Cistercian monks. As soon as you enter, on the left there is the chapel of San Bernardo which can be visited with a guide, some frescoes remain. The main church has three naves in Romanesque style. In the columns there are frescoes depicting the abbots. Above the portal is a beautiful fresco by the Fiammenghini brothers: it tells the story of Saint Bernard. The first part of the church can be visited freely, but with the guide you can go beyond the choir, all in carved wood, where above you can admire the frescoes by the Genoese, he takes you to see the staircase with the Madonna della Buonanotte at the top Bernardino Luini, in the side chapels Bramante's Christ. The guide accompanies you in the cloister and in the specifications room where there are drawings by Bramante. In the vault of the bell tower there are frescoes from the Giottiana school. At the exit of the church you can visit the mill included in the abbey ticket, where the friars ground the cereals and where the Grana Padano cheese was born. There is a refreshment point and the friars' shop where you can buy local products.

You can visit it on your own for free, but with a guided tour it is much better, also because you access areas closed to the public (apse, chapter). Furthermore, the historical aspect is almost more relevant than what can be seen with the eyes.

È necessario effettuare una prenotazione anche se non si vuole fare il giro guidato? Ed ha un biglietto di ingresso?
撰写日期:2019年4月25日
Salve! Non è necessaria la prenotazione, si hanno due opzioni, la prima la visita libera dove però si ha accesso solo ad una parte (chiesa), la seconda acquistare il biglietto per fare il giro completo e vedere più parti e comprendere la vita dei monaci.
Buona scoperta!
