I revisited last month October and after years, the small Basilica dedicated to San Giulio and located on the islet of the same name in Lake Orta.
The basilica would have been built by the Saint himself in the fourth century, but has undergone numerous alterations over time.
Now it presents itself in Romanesque style.
The interior is richly frescoed and, in the crypt, the remains of the Saint are preserved.
A curiosity: the façade is visible as a whole only from the boat that leads to the island, since the square in front is tiny and overlooks the lake.

Nice basilica on the small island of San Giulio. It is reachable by a boat ride and some steps. Inside, the basilica is decorated with paintings. Recommended to visit.

Building is in very good condition with beautiful paintings. From the side with water taxi at €5,- p.p.v

The basilica is historically old and nestles into the old walls. There are very pretty frescoes on the walls. Down in the crypt is the famous silver death mask in the sarcophagus on the corpse.

The Basilica of San Giulio on the enchanting island of the same name is a very suggestive church, and is a point of reference on Lake Orta. The most valuable work of art in the Basilica is the splendid medieval pulpit or ambo in black Oira marble. The basilica also houses the remains of San Giulio. Worth a visit

Unfortunately, the Basilica is overrun by the streams of bus tourists who are ferried across by boat. The glass display case under the actual altar has been covered up since my last visit in 1986. So you can no longer see San Giulio in his robes.

You can take a friendly boat (barca) from the centrally located harbor for 5 euros. Even our dog was allowed to come along and dared to go. The trip there with a view of the island was picturesque. The main attraction is the church, but there is also a path of silence on which you can see very little of the lake itself. You also cannot get to the higher viewing terrace lined with palm trees, which is visible from the lake, because it is privately owned. The church itself is the "usual" one: richly decorated and magnificently furnished. The special thing is a catacomb in which you can admire the saint himself in his glass coffin.

Memorable visit directed by the guide Monica Mandelli, notable historical disquisition on the church of San Nicolao, a building renovated to the stylistic features of the Lower Basilica of Assisi. The story of the lives of the Saints and how they were frescoed was charismatic, the precise enthusiastic explanations on the ambo captivated the attention. In the crypt there is the reliquary of San Giulio, in a glass case with rich silver decorations, he is the patron saint of masons, as he built several churches, his legend is exciting.
