If you want the best, safest (related to Covid) experience to visit the archeological museum, go to the museum's website, then under "guided tour-adults" book a 50-minute private tour. This allows you to start and end your tour before the museum opens its doors to the public and the many school groups. Communication with the museum was in English and their response times quick.

My family of 3 drove 1.25 hours from the northern end of Lago di Garda, parked under the main square Piazza Walther (6 hr parking was about 20 euro) walked 10-minutes through the main outdoor market and pedestrian shopping district to the museum. If you arrive early, have a coffee at the bar across the street.

We started our English-speaking tour with Paola at 9:15. We were the only ones in the galleries and were able to view the exhibits at peace and a leisurely pace. My family and the tour guide wore KN95 or FFP2 masks. 50 minutes later the tour ended and Paola allowed us to view the rest of the galleries by ourselves. We stayed 15 more minutes and by the time we left, there were many school groups entering the museum ... hundreds of people. Before we left the museum, we paid and Paola gave us a tourist map of downtown Bolzano.

Paola brought Otzi's story alive for us. She is a passionate storyteller telling us about Otzi's life, his discovery, DNA methods used to piece together the evidence, and much more... such an enthralling ***** experience. Going with a docent before the crowds arrive is really the only way to enjoy this experience and get the most out of it.

Afterwards, we ambled through town, walked to the Renon funivia (round trip funivia and train for adult on 5/30/22 was 15 euro; remember to grab a map when you pay). The 12-minute funivia ride up the mountain to Soprabolzano/Oberbolzen was scenic. At the top, the train was waiting. We got off the train at the end in Collabo, walked downhill 5 minutes and ate lunch outside in the Centro of Collabo enjoying the views of the Dolomiti in the distance.

Note: While going uphill, sit on the right side of the funivia and train ... great views and photo ops. There are hiking trails throughout this area.

Enjoy your day in Bolzano. It was a wonderful day for us.

The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is the home of the preserved body of Ötzi also known as the Iceman (approximately 5300 years old). In fact, the museum was specifically established in 1998 to house "Ötzi", a well-preserved natural mummy of a man from about 3300 BC. This is the world's oldest natural human mummy, a wet mummy, as opposed to mummies preserved by dry conditions in a desert environment. The body is stored in a climate controlled chamber within the museum at a temperature of -6 Celsius and 98% humidity, replicating glacier conditions in which it was found. Sadly, photos of the mummy were prohibited. Nevertheless the experience was wonderful. It was very cool and creepy at the same time to look at it and to witness something like that. This find has offered an unprecedented view of Chalcolithic (Copper Age) European culture and in this museum you can learn a lot about the facts and theories based on the scientific studies of the mummy and what was found with it. I found all of this very fascinating and I’m very glad we visited this interesting sight. I think it’s a must when in Bolzano.

When I was in primary school, I heard a lot about Ötzi and I was very curious about this museum where his remains are located. It was such an emotion to see “him” “in person” and to learn about how he was discovered.
