The building was built in Gothic style at the beginning of the 13th century, to provide the free municipality of Treviso with a new and larger headquarters for the various government bodies; in those years the city had reached considerable size, so the old headquarters, of early medieval origin, was now too narrow and run down to fulfill this function.
The Council of the Three Hundred was then the most important city institution, which had, among others, the power to declare war, promulgate laws and elect the Podestà. Initially the councilors were around three hundred, hence the name of the institution which was extended to the palace and maintained even when the councillors, after about a century, became almost five hundred. All male citizens who were at least twenty years old, were born in the municipality (or had resided there for a certain period of time) and above all who were owners of a certain amount of real estate: land, houses, etc. could be elected to the council. . A wing of the Palazzo dei Trecento housed the office of the Podestà, the supreme magistrate who exercised executive and judicial power. Precisely because of this last particularity, linked to the fact that the citizens were given reasons for their grievances and the wrongs they had suffered, the palace was also called "della Ragione" (a common definition throughout the Veneto for this type of building).
In the 16th century, a large loggia was built in the building on the ground floor, open to citizens who gathered there to discuss their business or simply for leisure. In addition, a large number of shops and inns arose around the palace, so that it continued to be the heart of the town's social and economic life, even though the previous institutions had now largely disappeared. In the following centuries the building was modified, restored and modernized several times. During the Second World War an airplane bomb completely gutted the palace, which had to be rebuilt at the end of the conflict. During the works, the original materials collected from the rubble were reused, where possible. The Ghibelline battlements (i.e. swallowtail) that crowned the building were replaced by the current Guelph type, characterized by rectangular battlements. Today the Palazzo dei Trecento hosts the meetings of the City Council; in addition, some rooms are used from time to time to set up exhibitions and cultural events of various types.
The Palazzo dei Trecento has a rectangular shape and is physically connected to the nearby building which today houses the Prefecture, on which the ancient Civic Tower stands out. The building is divided into two levels: the lower one is largely occupied by a harmonious loggia with round arches, open to the passage of citizens. Two facades open onto the large Piazza dei Signori. On the corner between them there is a plaque celebrating the local result of the plebiscite of 1866, following which the Veneto was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. The third façade, which was once perhaps the main one, shows a staircase that allows direct access to the upper floor and a beautiful small terrace with balustrade; it stands on Piazza Indipendenza (formerly called Piazza delle Donne) right in front of the monument erected in memory of the martyrs of the Austrian occupation: the massive statue of a woman that the people of Treviso jokingly call "la Teresona". The rear side stands on the small Piazza del Monte di Pietà. The upper part of the building is characterized by three elegant three-lancet windows on each side and the Guelph battlements I mentioned previously. Inside there is the large hall of the municipal council which still preserves a large part of the original frescoes created between the 14th and 16th centuries: a very spectacular decoration with large friezes, several female figures (four of which personify the Cardinal Virtues) and fake columns fluted with Corinthian capital. The roof of this room is supported by powerful wooden trusses.
To find out visiting times and costs, I recommend you consult the websites dedicated to the structure.

There are many beautiful buildings in this wonderful city and this one appears near the top of the list of the best ones. Beautifully maintained and dominating the area it certainly is a focal point.

It is worth noting that it closes in the afternoon so you won’t be able to visit until later on. As with other buildings, it is surrounded by history and has a great story to tell.

It is also in amongst posh boutiques, some lovely pavement cafés and restaurants.

The original palace was completed in 1268, but the building underwent significant changes over time. In 1944 it was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombs. What you see is -to a large extent- a reconstruction. Still, an attractive building in the middle of historic Treviso.

Interesting to note is palaces like dei Trecento were always centers of civil power. The Republic of Venice was a secular state where the power of religious authorities was limited. Eventually the principle of separation between Church and State became a guiding principle for modern democracies. Today the palazzo dei Trecento is still the seat of the Treviso municipal council.

This place is a heart of town, we took a walk in the evening watching the palace with a charming lighting.
Nice cafés and bars nicely revile this square in front of the palace.
