This was our fourth visit to Venice. One would think we had seen it all before, but no. Seeing Venice’s through Michael’s scholarly knowledge of the history, art, and architecture is truly a far superior and unforgettable experience. Reading through all 70+ previous reviews will give you a good idea what it’s like walking through Venice with a guide who understands Venice down to the smallest of details. You learn whatever you want to know as Michael is open for any questions and checks to make sure he is covering the things you want to learn about. His encyclopedic knowledge and ability to explain it well enough for a novice to understand is without parallel to this long time world traveler. We booked The Splendors of Piety and Story of a Mercantile Empire and plan to book others in future Venetian visits. You will have a learning experience of a lifetime.

The tour was incredible. Not only did it offer a comprehensive and interesting overview of the rise and fall of Venice – the information shared helped us to enjoy our entire stay in Italy. We both enjoyed it and appreciate the time our guide took with us to provide a memorable experience.

Michael Broderick gave us the highlight of our trip to Italy with his six-hour private guided tour, “Story of a Mercantile Empire.” As his website suggests, this is an opportunity to learn how “barbarians, crusaders, pirates, popes, emperors, and saints” factored in the rise, development and then decline of the Republic over a millennia. For history enthusiasts, this is a chance to engage with an expert whose extraordinary knowledge and narrative skill leaves you with a deeper level of understanding and appreciation of this extraordinary city. If we weren’t about to leave Venice, my wife and I would have taken more of his tours.
Before we signed up for the tour with Michael we looked at the reviews of his tours on TripAdvisor and thought it odd that they all had five stars, something beyond rare. Having now taken the tour, we would be dismayed to see any reviews less than five stars. We told Michael that we wished there was someone just like him in all the cities we visit. He leaves you with an enhanced appetite for learning.

Michael led us on the "Splendors of Piety" tour, which included visits to the Frari, Scuola Grande di San Rocco, and Zanipolo to primarily see the works of Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese. However, the tour is not simply about the sites or the works or the artists in and of themselves. You instead come away from the tour with a deep understanding of each of these elements within the rich context of their time, place, and culture, the religious aspect in particular. This is all due to Michael's exhaustive knowledge, engaging explanations, and his ability to weave a narrative that helped us make sense of and more fully appreciate the historical, aesthetic, and theological aspects of all of the incredible things that we saw. We are still talking about this tour and cannot recommend it more highly - Michael is that good!

My husband and I did the "Art of Piety" tour with Michael. He was so knowledgeable and engaging. Four hours flew by. This was our favorite activity during our two week visit in Northern Italy. I wish we would have had time to book a second tour. Bottom line...Don't miss out!

The tour was described by a friend as "a graduate level education on a specific topic in Venice" and it did not disappoint. Walking with Michael is like strolling through Venice with a textbook on tape - he knows the topics so well. His passion for research and his city's rich culture shine through into well-planned private tours highlighting major landmarks throughout Venice.
My girlfriend and I booked the Religious Art tour and were treated to an afternoon filled with religious history, viewed through the lens of Venetian-style artists - Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese. We imagined orchards and fields where churches now stood; compared painting styles and philosophies; and saw how the strings of social order, art, government, and religion weaved themselves into a complicated web where none was independent of the others.
When back in Venice we plan to book another of the tours, both to see more of the city and to hear more about how the city used to be a crossroads of the East and the West. Truly glad that we experienced this tour and appreciated our friend's recommendation.

Michael took us on a 6 hour walking tour, entitled “The Art of Salvation”. It was a look at the influence of the Reformation on the art of Venice. I appreciated the great conflict all over Europe during this time so much more after this tour. His knowledge of art, politics, and theology is extensive, and he weaves them together seamlessly! If you are a history buff, and want to get to know the Venice of the past, Michael is your guide! I would book another tour with him in a heartbeat!

We just spent two afternoons with Michael who provided an engrossing, thorough and enjoyable overview of the development of the mercantile history of Venice. These two tours were the best we have ever had and we highly recommend Michael to those seeking a deeper understanding of the history of this fascinating city. We look forward to coming back and having the pleasure of taking other tours with Michael.

My husband and I took a 6-hour tour with Michael on our first day in Venice. We were really glad that we did. It was a great introduction to the city - its beginnings, its growth into a mercantile empire and its decline. We covered a lot of ground, both figuratively and historically and this provided a rich base for our appreciation of the other sites we saw in Venice on the subsequent days of our visit. Recommend this tour for anyone who wants a more in-depth understanding of the city and its history.

We were so glad for the opportunity to walk with Michael through Venice! We are thankful for his wisdom, patience, and insight!! We learned so much and had a wonderful time with him touring three different churches, digging deep into the history of Venetian art. Michael has changed the way I understand the impact of the church in Venetian society, and its place as a gathering point for much more than religious services. Michael enjoyed our questions and thoughts as much as we did, and we cannot recommend this more highly to anyone interested in diving deep into the history of Venice!

We have tried to get a reservation for friends a few weeks in advance during the summer and he was booked. We reserved several months in advance for the Spring and he was able to see us on the exact date we wanted.
