With only 36 hours in Venice I was desperate to find a shop that seemed worth walking into. The number of tourist-driven tchotchke spots is really appalling. Dinamo is a rare breed, a beautiful little shop on a corner with thoughtfully curated items made with care by regional craftsmen. To top it off, the lovely woman running the store is very friendly, great with English, and able to tell you exactly why each item is in her store and the story behind how it got there. I walked away very happy with a set of linen napkins made by a family who live in the hills north of Venice. Just beautiful.

The speed at which every-day shops in Venice are closing to be replaced by those selling cheap rubbish is quite staggering. In the area that we live and frequent we have counted sixteen this year. Some shops do survive and though their survival may be precarious then they do.
There will come a time, hopefully not for a few years yet, when we will leave Venice. When we leave we will never return, to Italy possibly but never to Venice as we could never return as visitors to a place that had been our home. In anticipation of said event we would like to take with us some reminders and we have started to buy ceramic ware from a shop in San Polo, not far from the Frari and almost opposite Billa supermarket
This small shop is called Dinamo where they sell small, delicate ceramic ware, mainly to do with the kitchen and the table.
If you would like to take one thing back from Venice that is truly Venetian then you might like to pay a visit. The difference between what is sold in this shop, Venetian, handmade, serviceable and often witty in design, is in stark contrast to the imported cheap tat that is sold nearby.
