Honestly the best way to see Sicily - we took a tour around Sciacca, along the coast and up to a Vie Yard for some lunch. It was BRILLIANT. I cant recomment enough.

On arriving in Sicily, I wandered through the streets of Palermo on my own and enjoyed all of the churches, architecture and other sites I happened upon, but I did not understand the history beyond it all. As I wanted to know more, I decided to find a guided tour.

After finding Don Saro through TripAdvisor, he told me of an all day long tour option exploring a lot of what Palermo has to offer by way of car or Vespa. I chose Vespa and I am so glad that I did! What fun!

Don was punctual, having arrived promptly at 10 am at my hotel entrance, greeting me with a friendly smile. He was incredibly informative and personable throughout the entire tour. He was extremely patient with all of my photo taking and even when I lingered at one spot or another. He seemed to cater the tour around my interests as we went along. The whole tour was like seeing the city guided by a friend rather than a tour guide.

A few of the many sites he brought me to were:

· The Church of the Gesu (chiesa del Gesù), also referred to as the Church of Saint Mary of Gesu (chiesa di Santa Maria di Gesù) or Casa Professa is one of the most important Baroque churches in Palermo and the interior of Sicily. The floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. The nave is 72.10 m long, 42.65 m wide and 70 m high and is decorated with polychrome marbles, stucco and frescoes. In particular, the marble reliefs with their figural and ornamental motifs on the pillars and the marble mosaics are extraordinary, beautiful and unique.

· San Giuseppe dei Teatini is a church located near the Quattro Canti and is considered one of the most outstanding examples of the Sicilian Baroque in Palermo.

· The Chiesa di San Cataldo is a church on the central Piazza Bellini. It is a notable example of the Arabian - Norman architecture which flourished in Sicily under the Norman domination of the island. At the same time, the church shows features shared by Islamic and Byzantine architecture, such as the preference for cubic forms, the blind arches which articulate the external walls of the church and the typical spherical red domes on the roof. In essence the church is nearly separated in thirds by 3 distinct styles of architecture. It is quite the sight and many Sicilians clamor to have their wedding there even though the waiting list can be over a year long. The church is annexed to that of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio.

· Chiesa di San Matteo which is a beautiful dilapidated baroque church which remains unrecognized by the Vatican due to it potentially being the birthplace of the Mafia and their dealings.

· The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo (also Catacombe dei Cappuccini or Catacombs of the Capuchins). The burial catacombs contain about 8000 mummies that line the walls. The halls are divided into categories: Men, Women, Virgins, Children, Priests, Monks, and Professionals. Some bodies are better preserved than others. Some are set in poses; for example, two children are sitting together in a rocking chair. The coffins were accessible to the families of the deceased so that on certain days the family could hold their hands and they could "join" their family in prayer.

· Santuario Santa Rosalia the church and shrine to Palermo's revered patron saint on Mount Pellegrino (It is 606 meters (1,970 ft) high with panorama views of the city, its surrounding mountains and the Tyrrhenian)

· A gorgeous and relaxing drive through Mondello along the coast.

In addition to seeing innumerous churches and overall attractions in Palermo, Don Saro allowed for improvisation of seeing and doing so many things I would not have found on my own. Some of which included meeting the last known handmade marionette maker in Sicily, sampling delicious fresh Italian meats, cheeses, bread and beer in the local outdoor markets, tasting gelato on a brioche bun, seeing all of the amazing rooms containing the archives of Palermo, stopping for photos in route from one point to another and exploring any place that may have caught our attention along the way.

I can say without question that this was by far the best tour I have ever taken in all of my travels.

Thank you so much, Don!

What a great experience! I was a bit hesitant at first to ride on the back of a vespa in a big city but Don was a safe and experienced driver and I never once felt scared or worried. Palermo is a pretty large city and many of the sites are spread out. If you only have a few days in this city, consider getting around on a vespa. We saw the main sites in Palermo and also had time to take a nice drive along the coastline to Mondello - a really quaint fishing village just NW of Palermo with great little restaurants and bars along the beach. Very peaceful escape from the big city!
