Passing on the motorway near Lucca, I was intrigued by this aqueduct on arches similar to certain Roman aqueducts which had evidently been interrupted to allow the passage of the motorway itself. I then discovered that it was the aqueduct built in the early nineteenth century under the government of Maria Luisa di Borbone by the royal architect Nottolini. It is now not in use, replaced by an underground pipeline along the same route. Worth a look.

The Nottolini Aqueduct, built in the 19th century with neoclassical elements, is an ideal place for a nice walk in the Lucca countryside. The starting point is via del Tempietto, 1, easily reachable by car or train from the underpass from Lucca station. The itinerary is mainly flat and runs along the arches and temples of the aqueduct for about 4 km (there are several fountains along the route), until reaching the beautiful meadow called "Parole d'Oro", a suggestive place with springs and jumpers. From here it is possible to go back along the same outward journey, about 8 km return, or continue on the CAI 128 path uphill to Gallonzora and then downhill on asphalt to Vorno. from here normal flat road up to Badia di Cantignano and return to the starting point. (in this case total about 15 km). Beautiful panoramic walk.

A beautiful and very well looked after place. A place of peace where you can go to get away from the chaos of the city for a bit. A nice walk, not difficult but it's better to have comfortable shoes since the ground is not flat but disconnected.

Very well preserved aquaduct, I visited it as part of a cycling trip from Lucca to Pisa and it was just possible to pass the footbridge with the bike as well, you either push or carry your bike up the stairs.

Pas vraiment restauré mais pas en trop mauvais état. Nous pouvons imaginer son charme passé. Possibilité de se promener en dessous, sentier de randonnée.

It was easy to find the start of the walk but a little disappointing to find the tower covered in scaffolding. The track is well worn right up to the basins it then becomes a bit obscure so we didn't complete the circular path we knew wound through the woods somehow.
There are a few drinking water points along the route and excellent views back across to Lucca from the other end. Casa Rosa trattoria is about halfway along but unfortunately it was closing time by the time we went for a visit on our return leg.
Well worth spending a few hours either walking or cycling, away from the hustle and bustle of Lucca, but factor up on the sunscreen and don't forget a water bottle which can be refilled.

Un'imponente opera architettonica funzionale molto lungimirante, che tuttora alimenta numerose fontane sia all'interno della cerchia muraria di Lucca che nel circondario. In un mondo in cui le fontanelle a cui abbeverarsi gratis latitano, è un'eccellenza. Se vi capita approfittatene l'acqua è buonissima.

Zona magnifica con una passeggiata adatta a tutti ed ideale per la primavera! l'unica cosa....assenza TOTALE di cestini o bidoni della spazzatura lungo il percorso, cosa secondo me molto grave!

Una bella passeggiata, consigliata in primavera, peccato per l'interruzione dovuto al passaggio dell'autostrada. Lungo il percorso ci sono molte fontane dove rinfrescarsi e anche un piccolo ristorante immerso nel verde, tutto sommato il sentiero è abbastanza curato.

Avendo a disposizione non molto tempo e potendo e fare solo una parte da dove mi consigliate d'iniziare il percorso a piedi per vedere la parte più rappresentativa?

In realtà non vi è una parte più rappresentativa, ma se hai poco tempo ti consiglio di partire dalla zona della "casina della rose" (con maps ci arrivi tranquillamente), dove potrai lasciare l'auto e continuare a piedi, percorrendo la seconda parte dell'acquedotto fino ad arrivare alle "Parole d'Oro".

Can we bike to the aqueduct? From some of the pictures others have posted, it looks like some parts are narrow/have stairs. It would be nice to cover the distance in less time!

Yes. Ride through the streets of Lucca until you reach the aqueduct, then take the path running along it. There is one large road to cross - which has a bridge. You may need to carry bikes over the bridge. When you reach the hills, it may be difficult to continue unless you have a mountain bike.
