Beautiful and wide square, not far from Piazza dei Miracoli, obviously always a stone's throw away.

Walking just a little way from the hectic area of the Leaning Tower of Pisa we came across this square which was practically deserted. It's the second biggest square in Pisa - The Knights Square! Nowadays it is a centre of education, being the main house of the Scuola Normale di Pisa, a higher learning institution part of the University.
We walked slowly around it trying to keep to the shadows of the buildings as it was a blisteringly hot day in August. There was nowhere to sit down here for a coffee or an ice cream so inevitably we moved out of the square to find refreshments elsewhere.

Second in importance, this square is surrounded by beautiful buildings, the Palazzo della Carovana, which is the seat of the Scuola Normale Superiore, the clock palace linked to our Count Ugolino, the facade of the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri and the building of the Recommendation of the Twelve (Palazzo dei Priori).

Knights Square is the second most important square in the city. Known since the 12th century, it was already a significant square in Pisa. After the mid-16th century, the square became the headquarters of the Order of the Knights of St. Stephen.

Piazza dei Cavalieri is second in fame only to that of the Miracles among those of Pisa. In the thirteenth century it was the seat of civil power with the Palazzo degli Anziani, that of the Captain of the People and the Torre della Fame now merged to form the Palazzo dell'Orologio. In the sixteenth century it was rearranged by Vasari on behalf of Cosimo de Medici who wanted to make it the headquarters of the Knights of Santo Stefano. Today it is a beautiful square but there is little to visit because the palace is home to the Normale di Pisa, the church that is often closed. Just a quick pass.

The square is kind of a vanguard before you find yourself on Miracoli. It is from here that the crowd moves towards the tower. For me there is nothing very interesting to see here.

Beautiful square, a perspective on the Normale di Pisa which gives the latter a unique solemnity. It was a very pleasant discovery during a nice walk through the alleys and streets of Pisa!
