A short drive from the city center stands the church of San Piero a Grado in the place where , according to an ancient tradition, Peter landed from Syria and headed to Rome. As soon as he arrived he would have erected here the first stone altar in Italy, an altar that would later be consecrated by Pope Clement I. The history of the building is complex and for those interested you can buy the text "the basilica of San Piero a Grado" inside the church. After observing the exterior with simple lines but enriched by decorative ceramic basins , we discover the interior , the portion , in our opinion , most interesting . The structure is divided into three aisles, the central one wider and higher with the wooden truss roof, divided by marble and granite columns, reused materials such as the capitals above them dating back to Roman times. We can observe the aedicule decorated with Gothic elements that highlights the so-called "Perino" altar where the archaeological traces of previous buildings are visible. Also worth mentioning is the wooden Crucifix on the side wall attributed to the Florentine Giuseppe Giacobbi. The frescoes are the most striking part of the building. The oldest traces are those found in the left apse basin including the scene of the Assumption referring to the early stages of decoration of the building between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, topped by a Madonna referring to the Florentine painter Buffalmacco reduced to sinopia. The richest cycle is attributed to the Pisan-trained painter Deodato Orlandi, dating back to around 1300. According to some scholars the work was performed at the behest of the Pisan Gaetani family in homage to Benedict Caetani , then Pope Boniface VIII, with whom they boasted a kinship. The cycle is distributed on three orders , in the lower one there is a gallery with the busts of the popes, in the central one scenes from the life of St. Peter, while in the upper register is depicted the heavenly city with windows from which Angels overlook. Stop to observe the individual scenes. It is evident the didactic importance of this cycle, a real "bible for the poor" but you can appreciate the precious details of the pictorial decoration, such as the golden leaves applied on the relief halos, testimony of the skill of its author. Recommended visit!!!

The church, in Romanesque style, is very beautiful both from the outside and inside. It is said to have been built on the spot where Saint Peter landed. The story is also depicted with beautiful frescoes on the sides of the nave.

Beautiful basilica with medieval frescoes and external decorations reminiscent of North Africa. It was the symbol of those who arrived in Pisa by sea.

Splendid Romanesque basilica with two apses. In fact, after the collapse, the façade was replaced with a second apse which wanted to enhance the place where, according to legend, the first Mass in Italy was celebrated by Saint Peter. In fact, legend has it that the boat on which Saint Peter was traveling was unable to disembark in Ostia due to a strong sea storm and was pushed north. The Apostle then landed in San Piero a Grado, a place which took its name from him combined with that of Grado which indicates the presence of a port in Roman times. Indeed, ruins of a Roman port have been found. An early Christian church was built on the site in the 2nd century, later replaced by the current Romanesque style basilica. The cycle of fifteenth-century frescoes by Deodato Orlando and the series of popes up to that period are noteworthy (incomplete series due to the collapse of the façade and the subsequent shortening of the basilica. If we consider that the area around the basilica was marshy and unhealthy, the question of the position of the basilica reinforces the hypothesis that it was built not on a banal place, but gives support to the hypothesis of the landing of Saint Peter.

Edificio di grande interesse e fascino. Una Pieve isolata nella campagna pisana, esito di molteplici fasi successive, leggibili sulle superfici murarie e pavimentali. Guardate con attenzione i capitelli delle colonne della navata, una attività utile a comprendere il concetto di spolia. Se vi trovate in zona, non esitate a raggiungere questo eccezionale luogo!

Auf unserer Rundreise wurde uns diese historische alte Kirche gezeigt. Schlicht und einfach steht sie verträumt in diesem kleinen Ort. Leider fehlt das Geld für weitere Ausgrabungen, weil kein Eintrittsgeld verlangt wird und die Touristen fehlen. Ausgerechnet hat ein Bombentreffer im II. Weltkrieg den Glockenturm getroffen, der dann auf das rechte Kirchenschiff stürzte. Er zerstörte die Fresken unwiederruflich. Die rechte Seite der Kirche wurde nach dem Krieg notdürftig wieder hergestellt. Sehr traurig, daß dafür kein Geld da ist. Ein Besuch lohnt sich dennoch.

Sorge isolata in mezzo alla campagna e deve il suo nome alla leggenda che la indica come logo dove Sbarco San Pietro.
Basilica romana senza fronte( si entra da un lato ) e senza campanile ( fatto abbattere dai tedeschi durante la seconda guerra mondiale)
