Beautiful experience. We went up by cable car, exciting. The basilica preserves the 3 candles used for the procession.

On the initiative of the noblewomen Elisabetta and Eleonora Gonzaga and Pope Giulio II, in 1513 the construction of the Basilica was begun on a much older but modest church where the body, now mummified, of the Patron Saint of Gubbio is preserved, in a crystal case: UBALDO. Bishop of Gubbio, he was ordained Priest in 1113 and incardinated as Bishop in 1126 in Gubbio where he exercised this office for 31 years. In 1155, Ubaldo confronted Emperor Federico Barbarossa, convincing him not to attack Gubbio, who did not suffer the fate of Spoleto, razed to the ground. Saint Ubald died in 1160 and his body was mummified. An anecdote concerns the relic of St. Ubald which is devoid of the thumb of the hand as such finger and the Pastoral Ring was amputated by a servant of the Saint who fled to France. This servant, asleep, thrust the staff with the Ring into the ground, which neither the servant nor others could unravel from the ground. Around the relic, later, the Gothic Cathedral of Saint Thiébaud in Thann was built. The Basilica of Gubbio has an interior divided into five naves, dominated by the high altar built in 1884, in neo-Gothic style, and rises above Monte Ingino from which you can see the panorama of the city of Gubbio. Inside the Basilica, in addition to the body of the saint, is preserved in another case the beautifully historiated Mythia of Ubaldo. Also inside the Basilica, the three traditional candles, currently made of wood, are preserved and protected. On the occasion of the Festa dei Ceri, on the first Sunday of May, they are transferred to the Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio and then, on the 15th, they are transported by groups of Eugubini, on their shoulders, back to the Basilica in a hurry and following the steep road. Inside the Sanctuary of Ubaldo there is the “WALL TOWEL” that was donated to the Basilica by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, in 1240, to garnish the relics of the Saint. From the point of view of the structure, the main entrance is located at the top of a long flight of stairs followed by the portal and the cloister with arches surmounted by cross vaults.

Very beautiful, like all the basilicas, here, however, there is something more. there are the 3 candles that are used when celebrating San Ubaldo patron saint of Gubbio festival very heartfelt by the people of Gubbio. Then there is the body of San Ubaldo enclosed in a case and what struck me the funerary chest of San Ubaldo. a well-preserved chest,, imposing black, almost puts fear in observing it .Particular is also the climb to the Basilica with a "lift" type skiers 50/70 ...

Definitely a magical place to see absolutely, you can get there in different ways but if you do not suffer from dizziness I Recommendation the zip line, very exciting, inside there are no words to describe what you see but especially what you feel

To visit! It's worth it! Even following the route, uphill and on foot...2 km...with an estimated time of 40 minutes; but, as in my case, lasting two hours!, and the descent, on foot, again; or, by cable car!..

The Basilica of San Ubaldo is located on a mountain, to get there we took the cable car.
Beautiful location and beautiful structure, inside the church you can admire the candles that are used for the tiring festival of candles.
Inside, in addition to the candles, there are some beautiful stained glass windows on the history of San Ubaldo, but I haven't looked into the history in depth.

The Basilica is located on the top of Mount Ingino, on whose side the famous Christmas Tree is lit. The peculiarity of this Basilica is getting there by the famous cable car or cestovia, but we went by car to also enjoy views and glimpses of the Eugubine mountains; Furthermore, the road is excellent and you can get there in a few minutes.
The Basilica is wonderful to see and there is also the possibility of following excursion routes. An essential stop for those visiting Gubbio.

The basilica which houses the remains of the patron saint of Gubbio, located on the top of a hill overlooking Gubbio. It can be reached by cable car (they are "baskets" for two people), by car or on foot, as we did. Inside you can admire the candles of the famous race.

We decided to visit it, intrigued by the cage cable car that goes up from the city (but which we didn't take). It's worth the fifteen-minute drive uphill because in addition to the historical, cultural and architectural value, from up there you can see the whole of Gubbio and beyond. Furthermore, as soon as we entered, the wedding march started as music spread (we were the only visitors at that moment, I won't tell you the emotion). The cloister is beautiful, the flowered well is beautiful, the mosaics with the stages of the life of Saint Ubaldo are interesting. The candles used for the famous race are impressive.

Salve! Chiedo a chi ha già visitato il posto: è possibile consumare pranzo al sacco con piccoli gruppi (10-12 persone) nei dintorni della Basilica? Grazie

Nelle vicinanze ci sono un paio di bar e tutt' intorno alla basilica c'è tanto spazio e prato per pranzare e passare un po' di tempo, è immersa nel verde.Non ci sono ristoranti mi pare,o almeno io non ne ho visti

Ciao, come punto di ristoro vicino all'Abbazia di San Ubaldo, c'è un bar che fa ottimi panini, se invece vuoi fare un ottimo pranzo, scendi in centro e vai alla Taverna del Lupo.
