We found the gardens by happy accident and enjoyed wandering the paths and seeing the historical connections. There's a redwood tree, the only one I've ever seen outside California. Free admission.

A botanical garden since 1589, one of the oldest in the world, this lovely place was a wonderful visit for a few hours, with lots of benches to relax and enjoy the air and view. Open 8 am - 6 pm April to October, it's well worth a tram trip from the main train station.

A delightful garden, which is free to walk around. Wide variety of plants, rock garden, pools, hot house to explore. There is a shop and cafe. Really worth visiting. You can get to the gardens on the bus which leaves from outside the Swiss rail station in Basel

This garden is an oasis in the city of Basel. It is attached to a university, and is clearly used on a daily basis by students and lecturers alike.
There are plenty of places to sit and they are needed, in this peaceful reflective garden.
The plants in the hot house and the cactus area are amazing.

At first, I thought the gardens were small, but all items were labeled and there were more sections than I realized at first; an alpine section, a cactus house, a Victorian lily pond house, and regular gardens. I was very surprised at how many people were sitting on benches in the gardens, and how many others came to walk-through and admire the plantings – very heavily used on a grey, cool day.

A nice and quiet place to hang out, read a book, enjoy a sunny day.
Compared with other botanical gardens I've visited in other cities & countries this one is pretty small.
I think for a self claimed "arts & culture" city this is a bit a shame. But the garden is nice though.
I always visit the botanical garden when I'm in a new city and I like to photograph there. If you want to visit the botanical garden Basel you won't need more than 40 minutes for the whole garden. And you only take so lang if you're taking pictures and walk slow. Otherwise you will be done in 15 minutes.
If you want to see more plants you should visit the Merian garden / "Grün 80" which is a bit outside the city. There you will spend a lot more time to see everything.

Venuti in visita con la famiglia a Basilea siamo andati a visitare il giardino botanico dell’Università di Basilea le quali radici risalgono al XVI secolo. Aperto giornalmente dal lunedì alla domenica dalle ore 9 alle 17 con ingresso libero.
È uno tra i più antichi giardini botanici del mondo e offre un’immensa varietà di piante in una stupenda oasi.
Il giardino è raggiungile in circa 20 minuti a piedi dalla stazione ferroviaria di Basilea o tramite tram no. 3 in soli una decina di minuti scendendo alla fermata Spalentor.
Si trova vicino alla Porta di Spalen (Spalentor), è stato fondato da Caspar Bauhin nel 1589 e originariamente si trovava sotto l’attuale vecchia università della Rheinsprung.
Dispone inoltre di una serra dal clima tropicale dove ci si può addentrare nell’affascinante mondo della foresta pluviale e vedere stupende piante e fiori.
Anche la serra dei cactus, con tantissimi tipi è stata stupenda, tante le varietà di tutto il mondo.
Penso una visita a metà primavera sia l’ideale, quindi sicurante torneremo ad ammirare le fioriture di questo stupendo giardino.
Consigliata la visita anche a famiglie con bambini.

Yes it is open in November. According to the website it is open between 0800 and 1700. It is well worth a visit!
