What a fun way to see the area and get from place to place. We took the train and the boat portion of the trip from Lugano to Lucern. It was breathtaking and so pleasant. Boat was a bit crowded but we reserved a table at a restaurant which helped make it more of a pleasant adventure.

The steam boat section is truly stunning. However that section is bookable separately. Apparently you can book a regular train through the same Gotthard route, although I’m not even sure that is worth it (perhaps in winter?). My main reason for suggesting decoupling the train and boat journey is to advise you to eat or get a snack before boarding the boat, because the on board cafe service was very poor, uncommunicative, and overpriced for what is basically warmed-up airplane food.

The Swiss rail system has three special scenic train routes and we took this one from Lucerne to Lake Lugano. This route features really nice rail cars with comfortable seating and huge windows. We started the trip on a ferry that left directly in front of the Lucerne train station. We had reserved a table for lunch which gave us a place to sit and admire the lake as we sailed across it. We all had perch fillets, tartar sauce and salad along with a local beer. Delicious and served up with style. The lake and the surrounding mountains were a stunning tableau and to see it from the water was special. We boarded the train on the Southern side of the lake and wound our way up the scenic valley before dropping down the other side to Lake Lugano. We had a clear day so views of the snowy peaks and cliffs and the river below were gorgeous. Along the way the attendant recited the history of the creation of the tunnel (a different and quicker route than the Panoramic takes) which modernized this route and was an engineering marvel. The whole trip was comfortable, relaxing, and much more interesting than zooming through a tunnel. One fun feature was they gave us blank postcards which we could fill out, affix our address, and they put stamps on them before mailing. It was a nice reminder of our vacation to have a postcard waiting for us at home. We also enjoyed Lake Lugano.

After a beautiful boat trip from Lucerne to Fluelen, a perfect connection to the panorama express. (suitcases had already been dropped off at the boat pier and could be picked up again at the end of the train journey)
With a beautiful and neat-looking panoramic train the journey to Lugano via a very beautiful route. The necessary information along the way via the broadcaster. In the Gotthard tunnel the lights were turned off and images of the construction of the tunnel were shown in the tunnel. And delicious snacks and drinks on board with permanent hostesses in front of the wagon (1st class recommended). Upon arrival in Lugano, the suitcases could be picked up at the front of the train.

Gotthard Panorama Express and Boat, Lugano to Lucerne
This review from the perspective of non-Swiss person having gone only once before on the Express and Boat.
Website to buy tickets confusing and difficult. The Express is a different company than SBB, different website. Can’t tell exactly what price to pay to make sure boat is included. We paid the top price but perhaps could have paid less? Very difficult to get reliable information from calling or emailing.
Stayed one night in Lugano to catch express next morning. Express cars and seating really nice, roomy. Snacks drinks, tour advice provided. There was one picture car which was a basic car with windows that slide down. Beautiful scenery on the trip. We got off the train in Fluelen to board the boat.
First class on boat is upstairs and comes with a meal. Meal is extra but was ok. First class allows you to always sit inside with the possibility of a window seat. If riding first class, suggest one person head upstairs to secure a table.
Your luggage is taken from you at the beginning of the train portion of he trip and carried for you to the Lucerne train station.

As part of our independent train tour around Switzerland, the Gotthard Panorama Express was our first section. A first class train only, the seats were comfortable (at tables), the carriage roomy, the windows large and the service excellent. Thanks to our concierge, Erick, who was a natural for the position - entertaining, friendly, polite and knowledgeable. Information brochures were available at all seats and a complimentary Gotthard Express pen was provided, along with a tin the shape of a train carriage, of love heart chocolates.
The scenery I thought would have been better, but it was still pleasant, without being outstanding, apart from a couple of places. However, as a suggestion for this trip and on the other special trains, sit back and soak it all in. If you're going to run around the carriage trying to take too many photos, you'll miss a lot and won't appreciate what there is to see.

I am traveling to Switzerland and I purchased the Swiss Travel Pass. I want to go on Gotthard Panorama Express. When I do to reservations I only see Swiss Travel Card under Deductions. How do I make a reservation with a Swiss Travel Pass?

Hello, is there anywhere near the Luzern port (or a village nearby with rail connection) that we can park our campervan overnight? We plan to take the gotthard panorama express to Lugano, stay 1 night, and then return to Luzern, so need to leave our van overnight. Thank you!

I've got a ticket question. What's the best deal for booking this trip? I'll be traveling at the end of August. Can I get a Saver Day Pass? Or would some other pass be a better value? There's so many options for types of tickets to purchase that now I'm just confused.

Bonjour, de passage à Lucerne, j aimerais faire cette balade bateau + train mais je ne trouve pas d info sur le retour. Est ce une boucle? Comment revient on à Lucerne le soir? Doit on prendre deux billets ( un aller et un retour)???

Le voyage commence à Lucerne et se termine au Tessin à Bellinzone à 16.08 et à Lugano à 16.38.
Vous pouvez y rester aussi longtemps que vous le souhaitez ou même passer une autre nuit dans le Tessin méditerranéen. Pour le retour à Lucerne, nous vous recommandons de faire un tour rapide par le tunnel de base du Gothard (le plus long tunnel ferroviaire du monde), qui vaut vraiment le coup d'œil.
Pour le retour le même jour, il y a une correspondance de Lugano, par exemple, à Lucerne XX.34 et XX.04 toutes les demi-heures.
Le billet de retour peut être acheté individuellement et n'est pas inclus dans le billet du Gotthard Panorama Express. Si vous souhaitez faire l'expérience du voyage en une journée, la carte journalière 1ère classe est le meilleur choix. Cela signifie que seuls les frais de réservation pour le voyage panoramique sont nécessaires.

The Gotthard Panorama Express will operate every Tuesday to Sunday from 18 April–18 October 2020 (including national public holidays). From Lucerne to Flüelen you travel by ship. Then you will board the panorama train. Here you can remain seated until Lugano without changing trains. With the Gotthard Panorama Express you will receive exciting information from the multilingual tour guide. More highlights await you on the Gotthard Panorama Express.

Une carte journalière des CFF est également valable pour cette ligne.
Veuillez noter que vous avez besoin d'un billet de 1ère classe pour le voyage en train. Si votre billet journalier est acheté en 2e classe, vous ne payez que le surclassement en 1re classe. Vous n'avez pas besoin de changer de classe pour le voyage en bateau.
Pour les voyages en train, le supplément obligatoire pour la réservation des places est ajouté au billet journalier.
