We stopped by the tourist office in the Bahnhofstrasse and were kindly helped. We wanted to have some info about the Bernese Oberland map and train tickets because in 30 years something has changed. It has become even busier despite the high prices and even more focused on Asian tourism which is huge in the area of Interlaken. Most tourists can be found in the shopping area and the Höheweg. Go to the Altstad in the Unterseen district. That is already a lot quieter and you see beautiful buildings and old lock bridges. If you want to park the car, go to the parking lots at the stations. In East we lost CHF 2 per hour and in west at the boat (Thunersee) we had a day ticket for CHF 8 (cash). That's not so bad because in Bern we lost CHF 3.60 per hour and in Lucerne CHF 8 to 12 for 3 hours. This varies per parking garage. Make sure you have cash with you for parking but also for drinks or food. We have had that a few times at checkout that you could only pay cash even in Bern.

If you want to experience typical Switzerland as a tourist, then Interlaken is not the right place.
Mann even feels Swiss here, foreign in his own country.
If you are looking for a Swiss restaurant they are either closed or with the prices beyond reality.
Interlaken is NOT recommended.

Arrivés un dimanche matin à 9h30, nous pensions nous promener dans la ville et y manger à midi. Toutes les places de parc en zone bleue ont été supprimées. Obligation de payer, et cher, même le dimanche ! On a voulu s'éloigner du centre, quitte à marcher une heure, mais impossible de visiter la ville sans y laisser un montant important juste pour se parquer même un dimanche! Nous sommes repartis sans même boire un café et je ne reviendrai pas dans ce piége à touristes qu'on prend pour des pigeons !

This town is a tourist Mecca disaster. The place is just littered with tourists and tourist traps and tourist shops smattered with some expensive jewelry stores. Along with not many good food choices and so many people in one town dinning is not a pleasant experience. If driving parking is a nightmare and the tourists just walk out in front of you so beware. I won’t be back! LauterBrunnen was beautiful just full of tourists and if you do decide to climb the water falls make sure you have good wet clothes and hiking shoes because it’s like an ice rink up there.

La ville de interlaken est quelconque mais le départ de nombreuse excursion en montagne. Le lac est loin du centre et ce dernier est éparpillé . Pas de monument special à voir. Plein de boutique pour touriste surtout vers la gare

Nice place to visit. Very convenient in term of the transportation. Swiss pass is a MUST if you are a tourist. We travel to alot of places around via the Swiss pass entry.

I have been in INTERLAKEN some 30 times in my life, albeit some 40 years ago.
Everything changes and so I was prepared for the renewal in some way. Horror ! Nothing, but nothing is left of its discrete and classical style of a small town that once was all elegance. Ah ja...hotel victoria is still there, but surrounded by "nothing".
I was truly shocked by the degeneration of this, once, typical swiss town with all what "was".
Cheap shops, amongst the finest horlogerie...garbage fast food "things" and prices that are shamefull.....I decided to go have dinner in Victoria to pay less for much better quality in the end....prices for tourist dishes, badly served at 30, 40 euros.....incredible. Fortunately the boat tours on the lakes are still ok, although expensive....
I am sorry but my swiss friends have to do something to bring back swiss values....

Nous nous sommes rendues à l'Office de Tourisme d'Interlaken pour des conseils de randonnée et nous n'avons pas été déçues... personnel très accueillant et compétent qui a su prendre en compte nos impératifs pour nous proposer une randonnée adaptée ! De plus, la communication a été facilitée grâce aux compétences linguistiques de notre hôtesse d'accueil.

Interlaken is around 2-2.5 hour drive from Zurich and is a must see stop on any Switzerland tour. Town is surrounded by snow capped mountains and deep blue river from the melting mountains ice. Lots of tourist shops and restaurants and a great base for adventure sports (paragliding into the green in the centre of the town). Some top end hotels for a stays beautiful town in a fantastic natural setting.

My wife and I experienced Interlaken in mid May and had an awesome time ! It took a few hours from our hotel in Zurich on the Swiss rail but was well worth it ! The views, fragrant flowers and the town itself made for a wonderful time. If you are touring Switzerland don' miss it !
