Matterhorn Museum
After exploring the Matterhorn Views itself, with your Swiss Travel Pass you can visit this
museum.
It has a wide range of history about the city of Zermatt and how it became a touristic city in this age.
There’s also a free locker that you can put your bags in before you explore inside the museum.
A lot of artifacts from the present and the past.
I also like how the animals are involved in building the whole city knowing their contribution.

. museum in basement: displays about historical ascent, mountain facilities, and mountain animals. Useful for some understanding on what it was like when people ascended the mountain decades ago, and for preserving historical information.
. shop at lobby (ground floor): local books (few titles available on English).
2. Bonus: photospots nearby
Ibex statue, woman climber statue, marmot statue, Haus Taugwalder, Gemeinde Zermatt.

This museum tells the history of the Matterhorn, those who climbed it and those who lost their climbing it. It goes into detail about the first ascent, and the four men who died on the mountain. There are some small home vignettes on the lower level that show how people lived in the area. There is a lot of antique memorabilia related to hiking, including old hiking shoes, rope, clothing, and mountaineering tools. All quite fascinating! We visited in September and the museum was open at 2pm - 6pm. There are free lockers inside that you must store your backpacks in. They have a small gift shop inside. Restrooms are available too.

Usually I like these but this one is not a must. You can visit it only if you have time to kill. Better to just walk around the town.

Brilliant museum in heart of Zermatt. Yes it is a smallish museum however do remember you are in a small village so don't expect a large museum to spend hours in. However, what you can expect is a very well done museum with a huge amount of information about the history of the area, the mountains, the geology and the people both past and present, significant and the average. We spent a good hour or more here and honestly could've spent more time. Very educational for many including the young with some interactive activities. A small but very good shop plus very helpful staff. Worth a visit and get to appreciate the history of the area.

It was super nice, my 3rd visit.
We watched the film about the Matterhorn. It was very interesting. Amanda really enjoyed this visit.

This is a small museum displaying of how people from Zermatt lived in the old days & telling the history of the climbers trying to climb the Matterhorn. The entrance is on the ground level & the actual museum is on the lower ground floor.
Our first feeling when we walked down the stairs was.... it was so damp inside! It has many displays, I particularly loved the interior of the old houses & the animals (i.e. Blacknose sheeps) displays. Unfortunately, overall the exhibition was not our cup of tea but it's still good for us to understand a bit more of the local culture & history of Zermatt. In my opinion, it's highly recommended for those who are interested in local history & especially for those who have a Swiss Travel Pass.

Beautiful, quite small but atmospheric museum about the history of the village of Zermatt, mountaineering (local mountain guides) and in particular the dramatic first ascent of the Matterhorn. The exhibits on display are certainly the highlight of the museum. The (frighteningly) thin original rope that broke in the accident can make your blood run cold. Exhibits from the "Mercenary of the Theodul Pass" (glacier corpse from the early modern period) can also be seen here, for example. The museum is definitely worth a visit.

An engaging narrative is displayed, with the main attraction being the majestically challenging mountain itself.
Formidable obstacles stood in the way of ascending to the pinnacle. The first ascent in 1865 ended in tragedy with the loss of four of the seven strong team.
Reflecting its draw for alpinists and climbers, around 500 have died on the mountain making it one of the most dangerous peaks in the world.

No need for advance tickets and admission was free with SwissPass if you are using rail transportation.
