Hinterdorfstrasse has some old and interesting looking homes that are well preserved and protected. Some of the buildings here are on stone stilts which helped protect them from mice back in the day. Some of the homes can be rented for a vacation so if you're looking for a unique experience it might be worth looking into.
Hinterdorfstrasse is close to the train station and the town is very walkable. This area is worth a quick stop during your stay in Zermatt and we included it in a self-guided walking tour of Zermatt.
Some of the hotels and restaurants near this area were closed for the season when we visited in early November but there was still plenty open in the main areas of Zermatt.

We were staying in Zermatt, so wandered through this area as we were exploring the village. It's great to see these old budlings preserved and cared for. The construction is interesting and is a fascinating look into the past. Very quaint and worth spending some time here.

A leisurely walk to the old part of zermatt. We didn't have a guide but we did see some people with a guide and I think it would be interesting to have one to know about the history. The houses are still maintained the old way, and it's a charming place to visit

Just take this side street off the Main Street in Zermatt to see some amazing and historical buildings. The architecture will blow you away and at every turn there are instagram moments galore. Very quiet most of the time too so you can soak in the history of these buildings and marvel at how they are standing.

…. that these houses still exist to preserve Zermatt's history.
Anywhere else these houses would have already been torn down and replaced by modern new buildings.
It's definitely worth a walk.

Best part of zermatt is that no vehicles are allowed there , all are parked 12 kms before station at Tasch and walking around streets and looking at buildings is experience of life time . Best trip ever

Some good old vintage housing here, they preserve it well and its well maintained. some of the older buildings are spread out in Zetmatt as well but here they look after them. lots of tours go through.

Arrived at Zermatt by the Glacier Express (which was breathtakingly wonderful). Settled in to accommodation for 2 nights. The town is quite lovely and incudes the amazing Hinterdorfstrasse. This is the old part and heart of Zermatt, showcasing the ancient barns, homes and sheds, dating back from 1600 to 1800's. Place it on your 'must visit' list, along with visiting the Matterhorn. Travelled by 'cog train' arriving at the peak next to the Matterhorn..wow, a perfect sunny day with the best view. Very magical and highly recommended - also 'must do'.
