Last Friday I had the pleasure of seeing the performance of Le Nozze di Figaro in your home. Let me begin by stressing how impressed I was with the artistic performance of the singers, actresses and dancers. Your dedication, skill and passion deserve the utmost respect. I was deeply moved by the acting presence and vocal excellence of the performers in particular.
It is all the more difficult for me to inform you that I have nevertheless left the Opera House with great disappointment. This disappointment does not result from the quality of the artistic contributions, but from the staging, which for me has failed in several respects to achieve the very essence of opera.
Andreas Homoki sums it up in his description on your website: “A Figaro must be fun.” Unfortunately, I didn’t get the impression that this goal was achieved during this performance.
For many people, the opera is a place where they can escape reality for a few hours – whether through the music, the set design or the narrative. However, this magic was severely disturbed by the multiple and suddenly introduced DEI elements (diversity, equity, inclusion). These recordings not only interrupted the flow of narrative, but also destroyed the illusion and enjoyment that are so essential to an operatic experience.
During the break, we exchanged ideas with other guests, and there was widespread consensus that these interjections were perceived as disturbing. I find it hard to imagine anyone buying a ticket for 300 francs to receive a lesson in DEI during an opera performance. It is precisely the historical and timeless nature of opera – as in this case a story from 1778 – that makes it so fascinating.
In addition, I would like to address the set design and costumes. They seemed disappointingly minimalist and uninspiring to me. Sneakers and modern clothing may have their place in an experimental production, but in a classical opera like Le Nozze di Figaro they seemed out of place and took away the timelessness of the production.
Overall, I felt that the original intention of Mozart’s masterpiece was shelved in favor of a modern agenda. For me, the performance seemed more like a DEI presentation, enriched with music, dance and drama, rather than offering an operatic experience.
I wonder if my point of view is a single opinion or if other visitors had similar impressions. Ultimately, I find it particularly unfortunate for the artists whose remarkable achievement has been pushed into the background by the production.

We enjoyed a fabulous night at the opera. In the company of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. All players were superb, but particularly Lucia and Edgardo.
In a beautiful build that is highly ornate both in and out, the stage setting was modern that was most effective.
A treat at interval time was a glass of champagne and a snack.

The opera house in Zurich is located on an amazing square just off Lake Zurich. Beautiful building and a very active schedule.

The design of this fine opera house, both inside and outside, is stunning. Our visit to see 'Das Land des Lächelns' (The Land of Smiles) by Lehár was one of the highlights of our visit to Zurich, featuring world-renowned tenor Piotr Beczała. Surtitles were in both German and English. The music, singing and staging were all excellent. There are tickets to suit all budgets. It's even possible to buy good-value tickets to a same-day performance, from the ticket office next to the old part of the opera house, as long as you don't mind sitting up in the gods, from where there is a good view. Indeed, these tickets were a fraction of the price people are paying for Taylor Swift concerts! This is a magical place and we feel privileged to have attended a performance there.

We did not go inside, but it is a beautiful building, and we visited at Christmas time, with the market in front of it, made it a special place.

Viewed Verdi's "I Vespri Siciliani". It's not in Verdis's top 10. Many solos and duets are rather tedious. Still, the main problem turning the visit into an unpleasant experience is Calixto Bieito's staging. This director tries by all means to appear sensational, violent with raping scenes and women being hanged, lots of blood and topless women. There are many cheap mannerisms nd tricks. They all turn the task of the singers into an ordeal. Present were mainly the subscription holders and many empty seats. People who read the harsh critique of the reviews preferred to stay at home. The polite Zurich audience applauded at the end. Mainly to reward the singers' efforts. Unfortunately staging wasn't booed. It should and t I wonder why theatres and opera houses invite Bieito to slaughter expensive and ambitious shows and their commitments to their public.

The opera house looked pretty imposing at the square in front of it. And that makes it stand out from the surrounding buildings. During my visit, there were doing preparations for the film festival, but those did not interfere the enjoyment of admiring the building.

If you like ballets then here is the place for you. There is also a free tour day when you can enter and enjoy it's beautiful interior Alternatively you can take in the architecture from the outside. A truly beautiful one. It is a very short walk from Grossmunster to this building. Enjoy.

We stayed very close to the opera house but could not make a trip to one of the operas. However, we witnessed open opera (house) day. The vast area in front of opera house was converted into a seating area, large projector in place and everyone enjoyed the free opera. It was fully packed with people, family and groups. Amazing experience for us.
