There is not much to look at in the archaeological section and there is hardly any information explaining what anything is. The map and leaflet is not that helpful. When you arrive they showed you a video which explained absolutely nothing and the screens kept going blurry or cutting out. The trails up to the caves were closed due to the risk of flooding which is fair enough, but the man on the desk didn't tell us this and just took our money, so we felt a bit ripped off as the price was not worth what is there. Much better to go to somewhere like Masada.

The site this days is almost empty as only now tourists start to arrive and visit the historical sites by the Dead Sea. Worth visiting the site to understand about the community that wrote the now famous scrolls of the Dead Sea at the Israel Museum, but also to understand the complexity of their life in a barren area, and that seems to be that only men inhabited the place.

You also can see part of the caves, not to visit them but see them

In 1947, Bedouin shepherds discovered over 2,000 year old Jewish religious scrolls, reflecting perfect copies of Books from the Jewish Tanakh and now contained within the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. Remarkably well-preserved due to the dry desert environment, the scrolls were stored in pottery jars, hidden within difficult to access, hillside caves. The complete Book of Isaiah was written in the 2nd Century BCE, on 17 sheets of leather, stitched & scrolled together, nearly 24 feet in length. Ultimately, through decades of archeological explorations, hundreds of parchment and papyrus scrolls have been revealed. Dating from 3 centuries BC through the first century AD, it is believed that the scrolls were secreted from the invading Romans. Meticulously transcribed by the Jewish, Essene religious sect, evidence of their village and strict, severe lifestyle have also been excavated. A short film introduces the viewer to this fascinating history, claimed to be the most significant archeological discovery, a true miracle of the preservation of God's written word. Traveling with my adult son, we explored the vast area, with my son scaling the mountain cliffs up to one of the accessible caves. Views of the Dead Sea and the mountains of Jordan beyond are breath-taking during the varying transitions of sunrise and sunset. A restaurant at this location also makes for a nice rest stop. This was one of the highlights of our trip throughout the Holy Land.

An important archaeological site, Qumran and the caves are also interesting to photograph. Trails lead through a village at the foot of the hills and to an overlook from which you can see one of the caves in which the scrolls were found. There is a small museum, but your time here is better spent wandering the trails. Photographers, most of the land is sparse and monochromatic, so visit early or late if you can. A DSLR with a zoom lens works well. You'll want both wide-angle and moderate zoom lens. Not much shade, so have a sunhat and carry water.

In addition to the site of the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls (which others have already commented on), this is also an important and intriguing archaeological find of biblical importance for both Christians and Jews. Most likely an Essene settlement (though not absolutely certain), the site gives a great sense of life as one of the three major sects of Second-Temple Judaism. The site is easily accessed, well-marked and informative, making a visit well worth the time.
There is also a relatively new visitor's enter on site where food and souvenirs are available. It appears to have been designed by a casino architect as you wander through a maze of shops to find the cafeteria-style restaurant. Once there, the food is adequate and efficient. Products of all kinds are a bit on the pricey side, but given that they support the people living near and around the area, you may be willing to pay a bit more. The extraction of natural resources from the area is a mixed bag, but you'll make up your own mind.
