This large square often has markets - we saw two on the 4 days that we were here - but comes into its own particularly at night when lit up beautifully !

Haarlem was a very nice discovery from Amsterdam by train. This square is like the city, cozy and alive!

Beautiful place to stroll, have a coffee or meal and take in the beautiful Haarlem. We spent three hours doing the above and popping into shops. It’s a beautiful town.

Grote Market is the main square in the centre of the city. It’s a beautiful historic square, surrounded by medieval architecture and art. It’s also the best starting point for exploring Haarlem.
For starters, the Tourist Information centre is located here on the ground floor of the Town Hall (its known as VVV Haarlem here). We dropped in first thing and picked up a walking map.
There’s a lot to see in the square itself before you even start to explore elsewhere.
The star attraction is the imposing Great Church of St Bavo. The small €4 entry fee was well worth it to see the Gothic interior and the incredible organ, which was once played by Mendelssohn, Handel, and a 10-year-old Mozart. Feeling short of time, I almost skipped going inside but I was very pleased that I returned later in the day and made the time to see it.
Other points of interest in the square include:
i) the Vleeshal (1603) - once a meat hall, it now houses both a small, free archaeological museum and HAL (a modern art museum)
ii) Stadhuis Haarlem, the 14th century Town Hall
iii) Statue of Janszoon Laurens Coster and several other sculptures around the square
iv) Hoofdwacht, the 13th century guardhouse, which is generally said to be the oldest building in Haarlem.
v) Verweyhal, 19th century building that also houses part of the HAL collection
Also, if you’re here on a Saturday or Monday, there’s an open-air market in the square, although it’s worth noting that we were here on Monday and it was a very small affair. I suspect that Saturday’s the big one.

An immense square (the market square) with many of the emblematic buildings of the city: church of San Bavo, City Hall, Meat and Fish Market (now houses museums and exhibitions) and many restaurants with terraces (currently in rehabilitation work, so covered in scaffolding).
The city as a whole is a real gem. You can see a very high economic level and it is nice to walk through its pedestrian streets.

A super display of medieval architecture combining hostelries built in the 1600s, a cathedral and a large cobbled square. Living history, I suppose.

We spent a few hours in Haarlem during one of our days in Amsterdam. Very easy to purchase round-trip train tickets (the same day of our travel - no advance reservations needed) from the main ticket distribution center at Central Station in Amsterdam for about 10 euros each. Very easy to then hop on the train and get to Haarlem. There are five or six trains running every hour from Amsterdam Central Station to Haarlem, so you can always find a train quickly. Once in Haarlem, it’s a very nice walk to the center market, the churches, and the rest of Haarlem. A very cute town, and not nearly as busy as an Amsterdam.

The main square of Haarlem Grote Markt is about a 10-minute walk from the train station. Its ensemble was formed in the Golden Age of Holland, at the beginning of the XVII century and has not changed fundamentally since then. Because of the Church of St. The Bavo square looks like a Yorkshire terrier from above. Thanks to local artists Peter Sunredam and Gerrit Berkhade, we know well what the Grote Markt looked like in the XVII century. Since then, there have been two fundamental changes - these are two monuments in the center of the square. The man next to Sint Bavo is Lawrens Coster, whom the Dutch consider to be the real inventor of printing (i.e. typeface), denying this to Johann Guttenberg, who, in their opinion, did it 16 years later than Koster. What is meant by the second monument was initially known only by the author. You can see the "Sun Fighter" in this design only after a few liters of Haarlem beer. Unlike the statue of Coster, many residents advocated moving the monument from the square, but it has been standing since 1967. The dominant feature of the square is the church of Sint Bavo, also called the Grote Kerk, built in 1400-1550. In addition to it, two other buildings stand out on the square, built by one architect - at the same time, the city inspector Lieven de Key. First, in 1602, he completed the building of the Meat Market, which is eloquently signaled by the bull's head on the facade. Then he proceeded to the facade of the Town Hall, built earlier, but damaged by fire. De Key decorated the Town Hall with a statue of Themis at the top. As it should be, with scales and a sword. You can see by the bare leg that the Haarlem Themis has elastic calves and thick thighs. However, in general, de Key's house for meat merchants turned out better than that of the members of the city Magistrate. De Key failed to solve the problem of the eclecticism of the Town Hall. There is now a tourist office in the Town Hall building. And the meat market is now part of the museum of the great Haarlem native Frans Hals. There is a former Guardhouse (Hoofdwacht) opposite the Meat Market. To the left there`s the most famous cafe in the square, if not in the whole of Haarlem - Grand cafe Brinkmann. However, like many tourists, I chose the simpler option and took a sandwich with the most delicate Haarlem herring, onion and pickled cucumbers from the kiosk. Divine!

The Market Square, one of the most beautiful squares in Europe, is opened 24/7, 7 days a week.
The shops in the shopping area are opened from approx. 9.30 till 18.00. On Sundays from 12 till 17 hours.
The regular weekly market is on Mondays and on Saturdays. From 8 till approx. 16.00, depending on the weather.
The restaurants at and around the square are opened for lunch and for dinner.
Hope this helps. :-)

I will be in Amsterdam over Easter week and would like to visit Haarlem for a day. Will the market be open on Easter Monday, April 2nd? Are most attractions and restaurants open on Easter Monday in Amsterdam? Thank you!

The Grote Markt is the name of the square which is normally an open public space during the week. It is only on Saturdays that the ‘market’ is happening. Otherwise, there are numerous great restaurants and shops that surround the square with the church occupying a central focus. I would also suggest googling to see if there is a festival happening in Haarlem in the Grote Markt over Easter weekend. Monday is officially a national holiday in the Netherlands whereas Good Friday is not.

Hi. Taking a day trip from Weesp. Would you stop here before or after Keukenhof Garden? Where would I park a car? Thanks.
撰写日期:2018年1月11日
All depends on the weather conditions.. In Keukenhof you can specially enjoy all the lovely scents of the flowers at the end of a warm sunny day... so in that case, drive to Grotesque market in Haarlem first, park in the parking garage ‘ de Appelaar’ and you will come out almost at the market! Have a coffee there and drive on to arrive at Keukenhof in time to walk&enjoy the flowers!
If the weather is not very warm, do it the other way round. Monday’s and Saturday’s there will be markets.. so not good for overall view.. pretty crowded..any other day will be fine!

Does haarlem have a Christmas market? If so, what are the dates?
撰写日期:2017年9月3日
We will be there at the end of September, but not on a Saturday or Monday, so no market? Just the little shops, correct?
撰写日期:2017年4月18日
It is a trading area anyway, with lots of shops, if you are looking for making some shopping. It doesn't matter that it is not a market day, you still can enjoy the architecture of the old buildings that are surrounding Grote Markt, the art museum De Haalen and the old church. If you plan to visit places of interest in Haarlem on foot, most of the tourist routs are passing through the square.

What is the best way to get there using public transportation from Schiphol Airport?
撰写日期:2016年5月21日
here is a link with the bus route of line 300: touristbuddy. org/300_plaza-haarlem. php
(copy paste and remove the spacings)
Exit the bus at Haarlem Centrum and follow the tourist signs. Or exit at the train station (last stop) and follow the signs > centrum
Have fun!!
