Around the 14th and 15th centuries, a city wall was built around the entire center of Zwolle. The wall surrounded the entire city, gates were placed in various places such as the Diezerpoort, Kamperpoort, Luttekepoort, Rode Toren, Sassenpoort, Steenpoort, Vispoort and Waterpoort. Of these, only the Sassenpoort has been preserved in its entirety.

Lovely place to have a look. Small, more as stop on your walk in Zwolle, not really destibation, however worth to walke arou d and have a look.

A beautiful gate on the edge of Zwolle's city center. Highly recommended to go if you are in the center.

One of the only standing fortified gates of the town, you can climb up 100 steps to get to the clock tower. There was 4 stories and each one tells a story.
The man at the reception was very passionate about the history of the gate. For a €5 voluntary donation they were giving out commemorative coins as well.
Spent just under half an hour there. Since the windows are narrow views of the town are limited but you can still catch Peperbus and other churches from the top.

Sassenpoort - a beautiful sight. The gate was built in 1406. The gate serves as an entrance to the city center. We viewed it from the outside.

Our journey to the Sassenpoort in Zwolle was a delightful excursion into history. Riding our bicycles through the charming streets of Zwolle, we eagerly made our way to this iconic medieval gateway, surrounded by the picturesque scenery of a city awakening from its slumber. The scarcity of tourists bestowed upon us the rare opportunity to immerse ourselves fully in the aura of this ancient monument, undisturbed by the usual crowds.
Dismounting our bicycles, we ventured beneath the imposing arches of the Sassenpoort, stepping into a world where the echoes of the past reverberated through time. Amidst the weathered stones and silent streets, we explored the intricate passageways and climbed the worn steps of the tower, each ascent revealing breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape. In those moments of discovery and camaraderie, as we laughed and shared stories amidst the ancient walls, the Sassenpoort became not just a historical landmark, but a cherished memory of a time filled with joy and exploration.

Beautiful graceful gate with the necessary explanation. The Sassenstraat, which starts here, has a number of shops (such as the beautiful Mrs. Potjes) that lift the street to a very high level.

Der Eintritt des Museums ist sehr steil und nicht barrierefrei. Zunächst geht man eine Wendeltreppe hinauf. In der ersten Etage kann man den Eintritt zahlen. Wir wurden auch sofort angesprochen und unser Guide gab uns ein paar Informationen auf Englisch. Mit viel Anschauungsmaterial konnten wir den Aufbau der Stadt und der Bollwerke verstehen. Danach durften wir uns das Museum auf 4 Etagen (teilweise recht leer aber man kann einen guten Eindruck erhaschen wofür das Sassenport steht und was seine Aufgabe war) selbst begutachten. Es gab noch Informationen auf niederländisch, deutsch und englisch in Papierform zum Mitnehmen und nachlesen.

Interessant om deze Sassenpoort op je eigen tempo van binnen te kunnen bekijken (5 euro per persoon). Er zijn ook mensen aanwezig die je enthousiast van informatie voorzien.

De binnenstad met zijn leuke, aparte winkeltjes in Zwolle is een prachtig uitje dat beslist in de smaak zal vallen!

Driving in and around Zwolle can be a challange. Many pedestrian areas and one way roads. There is plenty of parking but most of it is payed. I can't remember there being a parking garage. There is not a lot really near the Sassenport itself.
If you are prepared to walk,10 minutes, there is plenty of free parking just outside the center.
