We expected much more of it in terms of Zeeland history and culture. It was mostly about other cultures and slavery but not specifically about sealand..very unfortunate, waste of money

Beautiful museum in a beautiful property. Very interesting exhibitions about, among other things, fashion, diversity and the collection of special objects that you find on the 4th floor. The most impressive was the temporary exhibition on diversity and how we need to reflect more often on the consequences of slavery. Very educational and unforgettable experience.

This museum was disappointing. With the name Zeeuws Museum you expect a museum about the history of Zeeland. However, there was no sign of that. But it's a bite snap museum with no common thread. There is also an audio tour missing, so you miss a lot of interesting information.

15€ for 15 minutes. The exhibition of modern interpretation of clothing, paired with finds (clay shards), as well as the confrontation of the colonial period, which is then crowned with exhibits from China, Egypt, did not reveal itself to us.
Little to see overall and admission is only valid for the museum, not the entire complex. Too bad...

A bite snap museum. We missed the common thread through the museum and the explanation was very brief. Not much depth.
The slavery exhibition was highlighted unilaterally. There was 1 painting by Michiel de Ruyter and some other prominent VOC “heroes” about which little explanation was given: about their role and that of the VOC in their time. What all this meant for Zeeland and its effects in contemporary times. There are beautiful colossal tapestries that unfortunately had little explanation. A beautiful building that received little attention. No idea what people had in mind in the last room...everyday Zeeland life???

As far as we are concerned, a mediocre experience. We are missing some more history about Zeeland
Upon entering, it was very neatly indicated that 1 floor was closed and we were left to choose whether we still went inside.
The floor about Zeeland was open, so that was our interest.
But we found little history here

We had booked a night in Middelburg. Beautiful city that you can see best if you do the city walk that can be downloaded via app for a small fee. Of course we also visited the Zeeuws Museum, where the exhibition "This is Zeeland" is very worthwhile. Gives a beautiful picture of Zeeland with beautiful paintings and many antiquities. The enormous woven tapestries made between 1593 and 1604 on behalf of the States of Zeeland are highly recommended. The large, colorful carpets show the war with the Spaniards in detail. We enjoyed the enthusiastic explanation that attendant Wim was able to give.

In most places we visit we usually visit a museum.
In Middelburg this was the Zeeuw Museum, located in the old restored abbey. We entered the museum through the modern glass entrance.
Due to the limitations of such an old building, the exhibition spaces were spread over four floors with relatively narrow exhibition rooms. Fortunately, we could use the elevator to visit the different floors.
In particular we visited the large retrospective exhibition of the versatile Adriaen van de Venne, who spent part of his life and work in Middelburg. We thought it was a wonderful overview of the different periods in his life with paintings, drawings, illustrations, texts, etc.
We took a quick look at the other parts of the museum.

It had been a number of years since we visited the Zeeuws Museum. We really enjoyed our 'renewed' acquaintance. The reason we went now was for the exhibition Adriaen van de Venne, a 17th century painter, also known as the Breughel of Middelburg. The exhibition is not very large, but it does give a good idea of the versatility of this artist. Paintings, engravings, grisailles and book illustrations are clearly arranged. A minor point was that the texts hung quite low, making it difficult to read. The museum's permanent collection is definitely worth seeing. Beautifully displayed in itself, but here again the text signs here and there are difficult to trace. It is certainly a beautiful collection related to Zeeland, but it is not a chronological overview of history. There are room texts in holders in each room for more information. All in all a very attractive museum in a beautiful building. Allow at least 3 hours for it. Free with Museum Card.

The visit to the exhibition about Adriaen van de Venne was certainly worth the train journey of more than 3 hours. The museum is a 10-minute walk from the station. I was kindly received there and the routing was explained in a few lines. The exhibition is located in two divided rooms on the second floor of the former abbey. She takes you through a short biography of the artist, his drawings and poems for illustrated poetry collections, depictions of the four seasons, his moralistic messages in painted brunailles (which are cheaper paintings in brown tones), his love for the governors Maurits and Frederik Hendrik and some events from the 80 Years War. The exhibition is clearly designed and the objects and their explanations are generally well lit. She gives you an excellent overview of the life and work of this lesser master from the 17th century. It is nice to see that this painter also included real portraits of the House of Orange and himself in his "Breughelian" landscapes (some painted on copper).
Naturally, I took the opportunity to see the rest of the museum. I found the small cabinets of curiosities or wonder rooms interesting and will also appeal to children. The fashion exhibition and the sewing studio were of no use to me. In the exhibition "This is Zeeland" I found a few beautiful 17th century portraits of Janneken de Looper and Maria van Roubergen - attributed to Salomon Mesdach - next to the well-known portrait of Michiel de Ruijter by Ferdinand Bol. In a large part of this exhibition, objects from the beginning of our era to the 21st century hang and stand together to respond to each other: a statue from the Nehalennia temple with a 17th century painting, Toorop and Mondriaan next to work by Coorte, old tapestries opposite a tableau of shells, and so on. This would not have been my choice, also because it only highlights a few highlights of Zeeland. You don't get a good picture of Zeeland over the centuries, from its origins on the delta of the major rivers in ancient times to the revival of port activities in the Sloe area (Vlissingen East) during the last decades. The Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, where I visited a few months ago, did this a little better. But here too, explanations of the exhibited works were often impossible to read due to poor lighting (the text hangs outside the light beam, is in the shadow of the picture frame, etc.). Another tip for the museum designer: in the cabinet with glass and ceramics near the room with the portrait of Michiel de Ruijter, there is an explanation next to the door with what can be seen in the approximately 6 display cases. This means that a visitor always has to walk back and forth between the display case and the explanation. Just not convenient! Provide each display case with an explanation separately.
All in all, I really enjoyed this visit.
